"There will be guns, blood, demons, and gibs"
There's a lot of stuff going on around Doom 4 at QuakeCon 2008, so for those with short attention spans, here's a summary:
- Doom 4 may not be called Doom 4
- It will have three times the graphical quality of Rage (id's other shooter)
- It will be multiplatform, but the PC version will be the one to get
- The multiplayer will not suck like Doom 3's
- Doom 4 and Rage are unlikely for digital distribution (DD)
If that's all you need, feel free to end off here. Details? Read on.
The name thing: designer Tim Willits has said the game will have a subtitle instead of a numeral. But it appears there's some inconsistency at id Software, as its CEO Todd Hollenshead said around the same time "we haven't made the decision about that yet. There is probably a let's not make a numeral game and some say we should make it one." This is probably where the fans should jump in and contact id about whether or not it should in fact be called Doom 4.
While the title will share Rage's id Tech 5 technology, they're boasting it "looks like it uses a totally new game engine", as it will run at 30 fps, instead of Rage's 60, allowing them to put more juice into the game:
"[Doom 4 is] going to be a 30Hz game," [id co-founder and software engineer John Carmack] told Maximum PC. "It's going to look like a totally new game engine on there, even though it's going to be built on the four years of effort that we spent developing this generation of technology."
Slated for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Mac, each version will use the same Tech 5 build, though the PC version looks to be the definitive one, as they say it could run at 60 fps, and that "by the the time that the next Doom game ships to consoles, PC will be light years ahead of current consoles."
Multiplayer: many were dissapointed with the lack of emphasis on multiplayer in the last iteration of Doom, so for all those, you should be pleased to hear this one will have a "much larger presence":
"[Doom 4 multiplayer] will not be as good of a multiplayer as Quake Live is, but it should still be good, and we will intend it to be better than Doom 3 or Quake 4 multiplayer," said Carmack.
Finally, on digital distribution, neither Rage nor Doom 4 will be released as such, as the company simply isn't looking into it for its major titles at this point in time.
As for a release date, Doom 4 will be done when it's done!
