It's no real shock that Ubisoft is taking full advantage of the Wii's motion sensing capabilities.  Actually, many might wonder why others do not follow in their footsteps.  It's safe to say that the folks at Ubisoft do good work, so back in 2006 when gamers got a taste of Red Steel, their fps for the Nintendo Wii, we had to wonder: what happened?

Thankfully, developers were not deterred by Red Steel's chilly reception and a sequel is now in the works.

Alan Corre, Executive Director at Ubisoft, says Red Steel 2 will have improved 3D motion, ensuring more ambitious gameplay than its predecessor could achieve.  Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Corre explains some of the issues with the first Red Steel and how they will be redeemed in the sequel:

"When you make a great game, you need more than one year of development.  A lot of games are made in less than a year, but they're not great products and they're not selling at all. So it takes some time to develop good games. This year we're coming with Shaun White, which we've developed over 18 months, and the same for Rayman 3.  I think these two games can be in the top ten of the Wii charts at Christmas again, and there will also be new Wii games announced soon - more games dedicated to capturing this new audience.

... Red Steel 2 has been in development for many months now, and this new device will help us be even more precise in what we do with the product.  The Red Steel brand is strong - I think we released it on year one, and that people understood that it was a first try on new technology, technology that wasn't completely finished.

And our game tried to grab the best out of it, and was a bit rushed to be sure to offer something in year one to Wii consumers. But Red Steel is still selling well - at a lower price of course, but still it's in the top 30 or 40 in every country on Wii."

The first Red Steel received criticism for "loose" controls and earned mediocre reviews overall, yet Corre remains hopeful in its second installment.

Corre believes that Nintendo's new MotionPlus add-on for the Wii, which tracks "true 1:1 responsive movement," will allow the development team achieve greater heights this time around.  "What was missing was the preciseness of the sabre," he adds, "and with this new device I think it will change the experience."

Hopefully the next installment of Red Steel is much better than the first; I didn't like the first one all too well.
