Ok, you people crack me up. First of all, when the PS3 was first released (Nov 06) it was the cheapest Blu-ray player. I bought mine for BOTH the Blu-ray and PS3 games. I own WAY more BD than I do PS3 games. It's a safe bet for future-proof over the next 10 years. It has HDMI connections, wireless internet, BLU-RAY, wireless controllers, upgradeable HDD, cell processor...need I go on? All Xbox has on PS3 is Halo...big deal. PS2 dominated the market before 360...now MS is planning a 720 just to keep up with PS3. PS3 has been on the market for just over a year and a half. Prices have fallen, sales are up. MS is scared. I guess that's why they have to pay for propaganda pieces and "fan boys" to troll around scaring people that the PS3 is going to die out. Good luck.

When you factor in the price of Xbox Live subscription, console price and basic accessories to match PS3 out of the box, you end up paying between $180 to $288 (depending on which Xbox Live subscription you have) more for the 360 than the PS3 over a 3 year period (assuming 3 years is the MINIMIUM lifetime of a console). If you consider that a console can be kept for 7 years (rather than 3) before upgrading to the newest system you're paying an EXTRA $420 to $672 for your 360. In other words you're paying $579 to $687 for your 360 over 3 years, or $819 to $1071 over 7 years! Hmm....now I wonder what the better investment is?

360:
No Blu-ray
Extra $420 to $672 to match PS3 out of box (fee-based subscription online service)Limited HDMI capability (only up to 720p)
Propriety HDD (60GB?)

PS3:
Blu-ray capability
Wireless internet capability
FREE Online service
HDMI (up to 1080p)
$399 out of the box
80GB HDD (interchangable)
Wide range of storage device compatibility
Connects with PSP
The list goes on...

SgtDan, are you serious?

360:
No Blu-ray At least HD movies are an OPTION, not forced
Extra $420 to $672 to match PS3 out of box (fee-based subscription online service) $50/year is a steal when you compare the features of Live vs PSN. Plus, im not using wifi for my system, so why should i pay for it?
Limited HDMI capability (only up to 720p) ??? All models have HDMI and do 1080p. Get your facts straight.
Propriety HDD (60GB?)Their HDD prices are ridiculous, but 60GB is plenty for the vast majority. If not, just buy an Elite (120GB)

PS3:
FORCED Blu-ray capability fix'd
FORCED Wireless internet capability fix'd again
FREE Online service Sorry, but PSN sucks when compared to LIVE
HDMI (up to 1080p) same as 360, oh wait. It only comes with composite cables...nice High Def experience there...
$399 out of the box
80GB HDD (interchangable)
Wide range of storage device compatibility
Connects with PSP
The list goes on...

Because ALL the studios are putting out HD-DVDs...

quote GD
FORCED Blu-ray capability fix'd
FORCED Wireless internet capability fix'd again
And these are bad because?

It came across as if it is a bad thing. If it wasn't intended, remember that tone is important.

To original message: The PS3 should be able to match and maybe marginally over PS2 sales. Now that the PS3 is in its second generations games, the CBE is being used more effectively and it is showing in the games. The end of gen 2 and beginning of gen 3 games will eliminate any visual and play handicaps between ps3 and its competitors. As developers refine the roll of the six-axis controller (gen 1 games didn't know what to do with it) and reintroduction of the rumble feature. The HD-DVD vs Blue-Ray war is over in favor of the PS3 making the PS3 and attractive Blue-Ray player with built in UPNP media client. The only issues remaining for the PS3 is exclusive game content and price.

To 360 vs PS3: (a little generalization first) Traditionally consoles had custom hardware at the its hart. The advantage being the console could do some amazing tricks when programmed correctly. A general rule of thumb is Gen 1) Get the game to work period and find bugs., Multi-platform is a must unless subsidized by console maker. Gen 2) improve the game engine to allow newer content, fix visual error, but still limit in-game content to port to multiple systems. Gen 3) Start developing games to the potential seen in gen 2 development cycle. and allow more exclusive content. rinse repeat.

The major hurdle with the PS3 is the CBE is so radically different getting from gen 1 to gen 2 has been painful for developers. This means the curve for gen 1 improvement has been disappointing. The 360 is much more programmer friendly since it is based on common pc hardware and can reach its full potential easier. What this means is the 360 is either at or close to its game content limit, while the PS3 is starting to come into its own.

On the online side 360's wins hands down. Achievements on all games, voice chat out of the box, live arcade with tons of titles. The revamped PS3 online area is a big step in the right direction but not there yet. No longer browser based was a big improvement in responsiveness, look and feel, able to download ps1 games and select ps3 games along with there selection of "arcade" like cames. I would like to see ps2 games also for download, more streaming content other then trailers.

"In a nut shell" the 360 is an excellent system for now but is at its limit. It may have a few tricks up its sleeves but its expiration date is about 1 to 2 years out. While the ps3 is expensive but has lots of room grow as developers refine there skill on the beast that is CBE, sony continues to improve its interface but again still needs some work to bring it to the quality of the 360.

Side Notes:
Purchaser, Owner and Player of the PS3 and 360 consoles. (owned wii, PS2, PS, XBOX, Sega Genesis, n64, Super NES, NES, Atari 2600). Gave the wii to my bro.. games where to much for kids but the experience was great.

CBE = Cell Broadband Engine ("Cell Processor")

The xbox 360 wins for online play, hands down!
Less than $5 a month to pay for a service like Xbox Live is nothing. Less than the cost of a gallon of gas and I can play competitively with friends, voice and video chat and messaging. No comparison.

The problem with the PS3 is exclusive titles. You can rant about how the PS3 technology is better. I agree. That is what Sony decided to focus on. But game play? Sure, they have exclusive titles, but none of which I, or most everyone else, would buy the ps3 for (MGS4 is the exception, although I haven't played it, I heard it was a good game). And yes, there are tons of third party games that go multi platform for PS3 and 360. But you don’t buy a console just for technology. Or Multi platform games. You buy it for exclusives. GOW, Halo 3, Ninja Gaiden 2, Bioshock, and Mass Effect are a few examples of games that are 360 exclusive or appear on 360/pc. Fable 2, GOW2, and Too Human are games coming out this year that are exclusive to 360. As for the Third party titles on the 360/PS3, although there are minor differences in the graphics of a multi platform game in favor of the PS3, it’s not that much to brag about. Reviewers who put the two versions side by side will say there isn’t really much of a difference. What really makes a difference between the two games is content. And despite some people saying that the PS3 will have more content because of the discs, that is not necessarily true. Take GTA 4 as an example. I chose this because for whatever reason, PS3 owners ( cough* Fanboys) brag about it like it is an exclusive title. The graphics are a little better on PS3, but hardly noticeable. And the Six axis probably works well. But in terms of content, both short and long term, the 360 GTA is better. Not only do you get the live service and achievements (which add replay value that PS3 owners wont have), but there will be downloadable content exclusive for 360 (as in, the 360 will get more downloadable content than the PS3). And yes, you have to pay for this content, but you get better quality for the money.

Yes, the PS2 was the king last gen ( I had a PS2, and enjoyed it), but with the PS3 concentrating on technology more than it has on good exclusive titles( MGS4 and Resistance are the only two garnering any attention at this point, and resistance isn’t even that good) and keeping exclusive titles ( again, FF13), The PS3 is losing. So, its not the tech, or its expensive, or third party developers don’t make games on it as easily, its that it just doesn’t have very many exclusives that appeal to a lot of people.

Hmm... My thoughts about this is that is pretty good news for Sony. They're trying to make the PS3 match the PS2 in terms of sales. The article about the 80BG PS3 hitting the market at a reduced price is also a good sign. It means Sony is starting to head towards the right direction.

I'm also hugely optimistic about the PS3's future. While it's losing exclusive titles, it may not be the end of the PS3 as a competive gaming cnsole or even a god console in it's own right. I predict that the PS3 will be like the GameCube. The GameCube probably didn't dominate the market like the PS2, but it had a good long run, with a large number of good titles. The technology is improving faster than we can really predict, and I'm optimistic that the PS3 will last for a good long time. Many of the games I'm looking forward too, such as Soul Calibur 4, Tomb Raider Underworld, and others, as well as previously released titles are multi-platform.

And yes, the PS3 is a sexy piece of hardware. The technology within it is amazing, and the potential is possibly limitless. Point made on that. Admittedly, as a Playstation fangirl and Game Design Student, all of the fanboy wars and "doom and gloom" only serve to annoy me. People, the PS3 is not going to "die" anytime soon. It's going to have good long run and be successful. Just because it doesn't "dominate" like it's predicessors, doesn't mean it's not going to be good or appealing system.

Just my two cents anyway. ^^

I am a 360 owner and will happily admit the PS3 is a great console a far superior machine to the 360 and wii The only problem is, it's come too late.

Microsoft have a great on-line service worthy of anyones hard earned (£40 a year). They also have alot of gaming support from game developers with all of it's exlusives and big name games i.e Gears of war, Bioshock and Lost odyssey etc. Also has a great line up for near future.

Sony does seem to be getting back on track, which is great news, because as a consumer both companys will bring fantastic games to out do their rivals. So either way we win

Damn Frederick, you're one ignorant tuckfard, aintcha?

First off, gameplay is associated with developers, not the hardware- not Sony's hardware. Secondly, likewise, the PS3 has taken it's own share of exclusives. Third, games that are actually developed by Sony (check your sources, idiot. Sony doesn't make all the games for their console), usually break records (IE: Gran Turismo/Shadow of the Colossus).

Taking a look at PS2 sales over Xbox sales says it all, so maybe you should actually do some fact checking before contesting anything, especially on the internet.
