Sony readies new 80GB PS3 for September, lacks PS2 backwards compatibility
Leo Chan - Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 | 10:12AM (PT)

40GB PS3 to be phased out, with 80GB model to be the one PS3 to rule them all

Like its bitter rival Microsoft, Sony Computer Entertainment makes known its intentions to introduce another console SKU into the market, whilst retiring another.  At its E3 press conference, SCEA confirms a new 80GB PlayStation 3 "Core Pack" scheduled for launch this September.  Priced at $399 USD, it's actually $100 USD cheaper than the current 80GB models which now come bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4.

SCEA's senior marketing VP Peter Dille notes that the upcoming 80GB PS3 will replace the currently available 40GB model, introduced last October.  With nearly all the previous PS3 configurations being phased out, SCE will at some point make the upcoming 80GB model its sole PS3 console for North America.  However, no price cut appears to be on the horizon for the 40GB PS3.

Outside of the larger built-in hard drive storage, the 80GB PS3 is pretty much the same console as the outgoing 40GB edition.  Unfortunately, that it will continue to lack backwards compatibility with PS2 games thanks to its lack of the PS2-based "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU, in addition to skimping out on the built-in card reader seen in the earlier PS3 models.

I just checked the Gamespot's article. And it stated that "[CORRECTION] As with all PlayStation 3 models, the new 80GB PS3 will play original PlayStation games, contrary to what this article originally reported. GameSpot regrets the error." Does that mean ps1 or Ps2? I'm guessing the ps1. Also it doesn't look like it'll be in Europe e.g. England any time soon do you think?

Well, PS3 60GB will be the only console which plays PS2 and PS One games and includes Media Cards Slots.

No matter what kinds of new SKU Sony release in the future, backward compatibility will definitely never be included, not even the PS4 will be compatible with PS3.

That's a clever money making scheme for maximising of PS2 sale records because PS2 got enormous amounts of titles (over 2600 titles) to enjoy while PS3 only got under 200 titles.

As for me, without backward compatibility it is nothing more than a new watered-down SKU.

An easy way to liquidate existing ps3 inventory. This will generate ps2 sales and ps3 sales. Once current inventory is gone, Sony can be the good guy and say "by popular demand we have decided to add ps2 support on our 80gig 399 Sony PlayStation 3. Very simple if you think of it. Look bad now, but generate sales, look good later, and be a hero.
