Overclocked HD4870 coming soon from Diamond and SmoothCreations

Promised to be pretty slick and real fast

Overclocked HD4870 coming soon from Diamond and SmoothCreations Image 1

Diamond Multimedia (video card mavens), SmoothCreations (a high-end, "boutique" system builder), and a company called DangerDen (who are masters of component cooling) are teaming up for a triple tag-team on the recently announced HD 4870 XOC Black Edition.

Available only through SmoothCreations starting tomorrow, this card will have the potential to be the fastest HD 4870 yet released, with the core and shader clock set to a maximum of 950 MHz (which is 200 MHz above stock HD 4870 speeds.) Speeds this high were reached by using an new custom firmware for the GPU, and a hardcore cooler crafted by DangerDen (water cooled versions will be available.) You'll have to the extreme overclocking yourself though -- the default overclock of the XOC Black Edition will only be 50MHz above stock (800 MHz.)

While not stated explicitly in the press release we received, it is highly likely that the HD 4870 XOC Black Edition will only be sold as a part of complete computer from SmoothCreations.

The HD 4870 XOC Black Edition should become available sometime soon only from SmoothCreations.

Update: A few websites are reporting that due to the positive response to this product, Diamond will be offering the HD 4870 XOC Black Edition as a retail card, in less than two weeks.

lol it's pretty much the card to get if DD is behind it. Often is it you can't build a respectable rig without their components being included.

if this stays under 300 or a tad over it's going to sell like hot cakes.

If it was actually sold without being in a system there is no way it would be near $300. Clocked at 950 mhz with a custom Danger Den cooling system it would be near $400 if not more. Sounds to me like it would be worth it too.

Even if it comes in at $400+ it'll still beat what nVidia can offer at this time at this price. Perhaps this triple tag team will be a start of a new trend?

CoolIT does it with NVIDIA cards so why not have ATI vendors going to 3rd parties for new coolers.

DangerDen on cards would be insane, and their development into cooling solutions would jump a huge notch as well.

D: if only they really started pursuing old school competitions for the best OC out of the box card.

Well, I don't know if this is entirely correct, but from what I've seen on another site, the card itself will come running at 800 MHz core, and 4400 MHz memory. However, the firmware for it will allow overclocking up to 950 MHz core and 4800 MHz memory. To me personally, that sounds a bit more reasonable.

Darkness-=> No the article is correct; the stock core clock of the HD4870 is 750MHz.

Hansizzle-=> The press released said it was was going to be released yesterday but it is not. I'd expect to see it on the website on Monday perhaps.

I was talking about the XOC Black Edition of the card coming stock at 800 MHz. I've seen it stated so on three other sites, and it just seems more reasonable overall.

Oh, I misunderstood you. Thanks Darkness Flame -- your correct. While the custom firmware for this card has unlocked the GPU for operation up to 950MHz, it will be sold running at 800MHz.

I'm really surprised by that -- to have a water-cooled card running at only 50Mhz faster than stock seems a bit overly cautious to me. Why unlock to 950Mhz and only set it to 800Mhz? Sorry about the mistake.
