Many signs pointing to Diablo III announcement this weekend

For real this time

Many signs pointing to Diablo III announcement this weekend Image 1

It is looking a bit more than likely that next installment in one of the most influential PC games, Diablo, will be announced this weekend at Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational.

Here, in brief, are the reasons why people suspect this is the case:

1] Blizz has been rumored to be announcing a game at this weekend's event for sometime, and June 29th would be the anniversary of Diablo II's release.

2] Last month Blizzard bought out the Diablo3.com website from a fansite.

3] Blizzard has been releasing mysterious teaser images. In these images have been visual clues, like rune stones from Diablo II. (Although, the images also contain some WoW Lich King imagery.)

4] Fansite diablo2.net reports that an "insider" has told them that Diablo III's announcement was coming this weekend.

5] Some job ads posted at Blizzard over the last year suggets that they were making a game set in the Diablo universe.

So, Saturday seems like the big day.

One of the more enticing rumors is that this time around, Diablo is going to be a MMORPG.

This game might rain on the parade of the upcoming Mythos game from Flagship, which is pretty much a Diablo III in many respects, and is even being worked on by many of the original Blizzard Diablo team. If Diablo III is announced, I'd expect it to make Mythos look more like a Diablo 2.5

Although the original Diablo was made off of the shoulders of other influential games, Blizzard definitely nailed a specific gameplay formula in this series that remains well-played and loved. Game mechanics from Diablo have been copied in a plethora of games. Off the time the head, Titan's Quest, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Loki, Mythos, Too Human, and Hellgate: London, and the entire orange/white/blue/maroon rarity loot system popularized by World Of Warcraft, and then copied by pretty much every MMORPG, was influenced by Diablo

So sharpen your swords...it seems like you just can't keep a strong demon down. Although if the game is announced -- as I really think it will be, this time around -- it probably won't come out for a fairly long time to come.

If it's Diablo 3, we wont be seeing the same game from 2001. Theyre going to revolutionize the RPG genre.

So all those copy cats have an old losing formula.

Part of me thinks yes, and part of me thinks no.

The yes part of me thinks that they'll really expand the online nature of the game, while updating and refining its core gameplay, and a bunch of new features.

The no part of me thinks that beside graphic updates, Starcraft 2 looks hardly any different than Starcraft 1, so maybe they'll be too afraid to try out many new things.

My gut says this Diablo 3 will be pretty different than Diablo 1 and 2...

If I remember correctly, strong rumors suggest that they have more people working on this game than any other besides WoW...and that it is going to be huge.

Well it shows they're disinterested in Starcraft since after 10 years the only upgrade they made is bring it to shader 2.0, while the core gameplay stays the same.

For Diablo, I sense greater things to come than shader update.

Ya. I'm going to predict they'll keep the top down perspective, make it a persistent-world online only game, and add an entire mmorpg load of stuff and places for people to do.

I'd like to point out this very relevant comic by Woody Hearn.

I don't really believe this, to be honest. I think it's just rumor. There isn't any proof to any of this at all, and the only point that lends it any credibility is 2. All of the other ones are speculation. They aren't proof. There aren't signs pointing out that any of these things are true.

This is just like what happened with SSBB. Having an event on the date of a previously released game isn't really that big. WoW used icons from WCIII, so I don't see the big deal with them using some from Diablo. Insiders are never hard to find when rumors of a big game come up. And I don't really know how you can tell that the ads for employees are all to work on a Diablo game. Tihs one could honestly just be my own ignorance, but I think the jobs titles are the same no matter what game you're working on, and I think most of the Blizzard games use the same type of coding. But there's no such thing as a strong rumor.

thealmightygoat had everyone eating SSBB rumors out of the palm of his hand until he admitted the whole thing was fake.

All good points glotnot.

Here's more info on the Diablo job posting point I made:

It seems that they are announcing a game though, that's for sure. But if it isn't Diablo 3, maybe they are just nailing down a release date for the Lich King Wow expansion.

On a side note, I got to hand it to Blizzard for releasing a new patch for Diablo 2. How many years ago did that game come out? It's great to see when companies support their products for that long. In a sense, Blizzard is like a reverse-Crytek.

If they make it an MMORPG, I will vow to never buy another game of theirs. I would rather it be a newly structured RPG that has even better FREE online multiplayer. That'd be sweet.
