Microsoft reminds us there are still Games for Windows
Leo Chan - Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 | 11:26AM (PT)

Windows-based PC as a gaming platform remains the largest globally, according to Microsoft

Microsoft has been saying for quite some time that it intends to improve the visibility of gaming on Windows-based PCs now that them fancy-pants consoles are all the rage, and the "Games for Windows" brand was born out of this initiative. Fast forward to a few years later, and Microsoft claims it has made progress in restoring PC gaming's lustre at the "Games for Windows Presents: The Big Picture" showcase event in San Francisco. According to Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division's Kevin Unangst, the Big Picture for PC gaming is "unparalleled growth".  Unangst explains that "Windows continues to lead the gaming industry worldwide in both users and total revenue" and notes that DFC Intelligence has predicted a 73 percent growth for the PC gaming market beginning last year up to 2013.

The Games for Windows brand will be bolstered by sixteen new PC software titles throughout this year, including Call of Duty: World at War, and Crysis Warhead. And hey, LEGO Batman is part of the Big Picture too.  Meanwhile, Microsoft's Corporate VP of Live, Software and Services John Schappert stresses that PC gaming is stronger than ever despite the obvious challenges it faces, including piracy and mainstream prevalance of consoles.

The Windows-based PC is the most connected gaming platform on the planet. Microsoft's continued investments will enable game publishers to take advantage of that connectivity while delivering to consumers the kinds of gaming experiences they will love.

Well, if you think about it, you use the same hardware for all your other computing needs.

If you stay right behind the leading edge of technology you can still play sweet games on high and at a very good price.

And when you are lucky to pull down $450 a month, it is still too expensive.

Yeah... hell, for a one time fee of $450 dollars, you can have the Xbox 360 Elite (350 for the Core), and guess what folks? It has enough of a kick to play most of the new gen games.... and you never need to upgrade. Well, if you think about it, most of the gaming population is poor, so most of us do not have the money to "stay right behind the leading edge of technology." Not that I wouldn't want to >.>
Prise-wise, the PC has no chance.

Bill Gates, why do you care? Either way you're getting money from me (err... my mom XD). It's okay... you'll get the big bucks as soon as I have a well-paying job and do not live with my mom

Consoles are cheaper, well except for the games, but PCs aren't as expensive as you would think. I make $40 a week and manage to keep my PC able to run the latest games. Sure, maybe not at highest settings with anti aliasing and whatnot but still pretty decent. The last purchase I've made was a HD3850 for $170 that is still serving me well, playing Mass Effect at highest settings atm.

Oh yeah and like I mentioned, cheaper games! Mass Effect cost me £25. The 360 and PS3 games I see in store can cost up to £50. (That's about $47 and $95)

I agree with DeathMonkey and Bill, I bought all the parts i needed for my PC for about £400 and that includes everything. and a year and half later I haven't upgraded anything apart from the RAM, although I do need to change my graphics card now but it will only cost me about $200 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141670 and if you think about it a PC can be used for a lot more than the consoles out now as well as playing games.

Yep.

Lets say you buy all new parts that are right behind the best. This is where you get your best deal, because you have awesome hardware at a price that just dropped. This will pretty much let you play anything you want with everything maxed.

Fast forward 6 months. You are playing on Med with full AA and AF max res. You are playing High with no AA/AF.

Are you gonna have any less fun playing 6 months later just because you can't have AA/AF on at the same time? NO!

Am I upset because I have an 8800GTS 512MB that can only play Crysis on High at 30FPS? NO! It's BEAUTIFUL!!

Plus with this PC I can do anything and everything...

E8400@4GHz, 2GB RAM, 8800GTS512MB, 22" WS LCD... WOOOOT

Why play at 30 FPS when you can play other games that look just as good, with 60 FPS on the consoles? [Except wii]

Seriously, for $400 bucks or so, you can Own a Premium 360[comes with the Hardrive] that can play any multiplatform game out now with ease. It just makes very little sense to me to spend $60 putting 3 gigs of RAM into my Machine when I can use that money to get a game like COD4 or Battlefield Bad company and play it, no worries.

Think of all the things you can do with that 3GB of RAM that your 360 can't.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for consoles, I have an Xbox and 360, but for "professional" gaming, PC is where it's at.

Can you make your own mods for Oblivion on the 360? No...

Another great reason to get a console is for games like Fable 2. But you need a PC for Crysis, so just get both and have fun.
