"We expect this program to be a great tool to teach students about the PlayStation platforms."
Mark Danks, the Senior Manager of Developer Support for Sony has just announced their latest program, the "PlayStation-edu," a Development Kit available to universities and colleges to get access to PS2 and PSP development, the same program used by professional Game Developers to make games that we all love.
In the kit, you get the development software, the hardware, and the SDK to learn and experiment with. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have released this for students to be able to program on PlayStation hardware as soon as possible.
However, the PlayStation-edu is not a general game development tool, "It is for computer science and engineering students who want to understand how the hardware works in the PlayStation consoles." It's purely for Computer Science and engineer students interested in the PlayStation's hardware. Nor can it be bought in a store or online, it'll be purely used in the classroom. If you want your school to have one, a qualified representative will need to sign some legal agreements with them and “get access to” means that your school will need to purchase the hardware. The program is only available to Unis and Colleges, so High School students will just have to wait.
