Mass Effect (PC) resisting piracy efforts
Kevin Spiess - Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 | 12:24PM (PT)

Game remains un-pirated so far

Mass Effect (PC) resisting piracy efforts Image 1

Bucking the usual trends, the PC version of Mass Effect has thus far remained impervious to software pirates. In a world where practically all games are copied'n'cracked on the first day they go up for sale, a working pirated copy Mass Effect has surprisingly not shown up in the larger P2P networks at this time.

While the game's DVD can be downloaded illegally in its entirety, the programmers from the dark side of the Force have not succeeded in breaking the game's copy protection. From comments I've read, the only working pirated copy floating around runs for about an hour before coming to horrible, fiery crash when trying to access the galactic map. From other comments I've read, Bioware employees would probably be very happy to hear that their game's DRM -- even weakened by removing the required every-10 day activation -- has been successfully in at least convincing a few pirates to buy their game:

"I dont have time to mess around with this... im buying it..." said a one guy named raggar86, on the world's largest torrent site ('The Bay.')

"I just ordered the game, should be here tomorrow. What can I say, if it wasn't for the crack not working I would obviously not have bought the game." -- stated 'BasicReality'.

"goddamnit...I will buy this game if crack wont show up soon..." --'Santtuloi' whined.

"lol I just went out and bought it... Apparently they're using a gay-ass online SecuRom checker" reported 'zenzou.'

While it is unlikely that game-stoning walls of Mass Effect's DRM will prove unbreakable, having lasted this long is an accomplishment. Up to now, the game's DRM has at the very least benefited Bioware's sales a small amount -- but of course, by exactly how much, is nearly impossible to judge.

Although many gamers have a great deal of hate for SecuROM, it does appear to be at least somewhat effective. And after seeing how many disappointed pirates are out there, sitting around, not being able to pirate this excellent TPS/RPG, it seems like Bioware made the right move by going with this tougher DRM.

With a bit of luck, M.E's DRM will hold out a bit longer; and even more would-be pirates will give up, and then cough up, cash for this well-made game.

I just tried to persuade my friend to go out and buy the game. I played this on the 360, and the PC version can only be better.

GO OUT AND BUY THIS GAME RIGHT NOW!!

I understand they want to be paid for it, but it's still a slap in the face to their customers. If there was no protection and I really wanted it, I'd buy it. Otherwise, I'll do without.

I would not call ME a well made game. From what I've seen, its extremely buggy. Also, I believe someone did find a workaround to get past the galaxy map.

Well, to Bioware's credit, they did cave on the 10 day activation thing when so many people (including myself ) gave them slack for it.

pod -=> I've put 20 hours into the game so far and I've found a couple of bugs, but it's very far from "extremely buggy" IMHO. As PC games go, its about average in respect to the amount of bugs, I'd say.

As for the workaround, that may exist somewhere, but at least in the world's largest 3 torrent sites that I checked, the cracks so far released have not been working.

Kevin, indeed. Though to be pessimistic, if it was up to them they would've left it I'm sure. But it's not entirely..basically because if they don't listen to the gamers they're just screwing themselves out of money.

Are we saying that the PC game is buggy, or both versions.

I don't think I recall having any bugs in the 360 version...

It's only a matter of time! I want to try this game out but I don't feel like forking over £35 for a game I might not like =/ Anyone know if there's a demo or something available?

A game packing so much content is susceptible to bugs.

IMO this is worth the money as the brilliance of art style and mechanics deserves every penny they get.

Dunno what all this talk about bugs is all about.

In maybe 17 +/- hours I've put into this game, bugs only got me twice: once I got stuck in a rock; the second time, the game froze on me in combat .

As far as PC game bugs go, M.E has been better than average.

So what, that's four purported hackers who will now buy the game, versus over 500 paying Bioware customers who've stated they will not be purchasing the game solely bacause of that DRM?

Yeah. That's a winning strategy.

And the SecuROM is exactly the same as that for Bioshock, which was succesfully cracked in about 14 days so I suspect the joy over the piratical reformation might be a bit overblown right about now.

Hehe, I'm sure there's more than 4 That was just from one page of comments. I hope it didn't sound like I implied only 4 people were thwarted by this DRM.

To fend off cracking for 14 days is a serious accomplishment. The vast majority of games are cracked on the first day.

I wonder when it will stop. When shit like this comes up the only people the company is really hurting is the honest customers. The piracy hounds could care *bleep*ing less and will just continue to hack at the shit until they succeed. The only reason most people pirate is 1. because they don't have the money to buy it (which is a loss in sales anyway) 2. because they are not sure they will like it and don't want to drop the dough on something that doesn't deserve it (not saying mass effect is one of those because it is well worth it).

This is pirating argument is getting EXTREMELY stale.

Dear people, do you know how Valve has made hundreds of millions? Well a little thing called the unpirateable STEAM. And the convenience of steam gave them 15+ million customers to this day. It's the only way to bring PC gaming back.

BTW, direct2drive.com is also great.

I'm not saying that it is right to download these games and never fork over a dime to the ppl who put a lot of work into them. That being said, there are a few reasons not to use copy protection on the disks. The biggest is the fact that a lot of ppl would like to be able to make a backup of somthing they DID pay for. If my kids ruined one of my disks because they decided to use it as a frisbee I'd be steamed if I couldn't make a back up copy of the game. Now, in the pirates defence...quite a few of them DO use the pirated copies and cracks in place of a demo so that they can see if the game is actually worth it. Truth be told, there are a lot of pirated copies that are shrunk down by the ppl ripping them as to be easier to download. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't want a game without ALL of the game. Also, most of the ppl I have seen do this stuff (I've had friends who have) DO promote the sale of the game right in there read me files. Are they gaining more money from doing this? Maybe. Are they losing any more money then they would have made in the first place? I'd say most likely not. Live and let live I always say. I myself do not have Mass Effect, but I've seen enough video of the game to know that it must be kick ass, so please just go ahead and buy this one by all means.

hooray for mass effect!
un-pirated ME = ftw!
however that only applies to the pc version of mass effect...these guys could pirate the 360 version any moment they wanted, whether they have a 360 or not is another matter...anyway mass effect is as great as yugioh abridged (i don't think i need to point this out but for the slow ones, not because its funny...and i don't care if you don't like either of these two)

Bruce, the only way to bring PC gaming back is this. Get rid of Anti-Pirating measures. This whole issue is a Psychological one. The tougher the DRM, the MORE Hackers and pirates will work to crack it open.

No Challenge, no fun.

iamjoe-=>The whole 'PC gaming is dead' is a myth. PC gaming is really not doing as badly as some have stated.

And it's never going away either.

x_revenge-=> In regards to Mass Effect -- looks like it's been cracked today My party is over.

ken-=> I bought a digital copy of the game. So, I can re-download whenever I want, if needed. You make some valid points in the rest of your post, but I'd propose that the piracy ends up cutting into a games' sales more than adding to it.

brucelee-=> I agree with ya. D/led mass effect from direct2drive at a 600kb/s sustained bit rate. Not bad.

nodice-=> I sort of agree with you, strangely enough. If you read my last story on Mass Effect's DRM it sort of goes with what you are saying.

HAHA, yeah it was cracked today. So, how long did it last?

Almost a new record?
June 4th, 2008 11:45AM(PT)
kspiess
Nah I think the record belongs to Master of Orion 3. The game came out a few years ago, and remains uncracked.

Nobody wanted to crack it because the game was so terrible.

Kev, I know PC gaming isn't dead, but I felt that I should use the same terms bruce used, just to avoid confusing him.

actually it is out on torrents about 3days ago, thanks very much,

and its fully cracked an works

so maybe you overlooked something here,

want the link to the torrent?

OPOLOKOAKA
Hay Bill_Gates03, where did you see a working crack? The TRFF (which was released on the 1st actually) crack was pretty much declared not working (works till a certain point, then fails I hear). And there's nothing more recent than that on ScT or SCC, so which one are you talking about?

Check your PM.

But really, go out and buy this game, the story is amazing, everything is amazing.

It's not fully cracked as near as I can tell.. the cracked version still has bugs whereas the real version doesn't.

Latest script from the net shows that apparently a functional non-nuke crack is up and running. 5 days isn't bad at all for them to hold out. If I hadn't played it quite a bit on the 360 I'd probably be more inclined to get the PC version.

I'm not buying this game until they remove the SecuROM protection. I doubt I'm alone. For every win in this battle against pirates, there is also a loss.
June 16th, 2008 5:26AM(PT)
Fred
DRM on this was compromised the day after the release....SecuROM is now only a hinderance to people like me who buy it. There isn't a loss against pirates, these software crackers are unbelievable.

First posting here, but until EA tech support get it's shit together in america, I highly recommend NOT to buy the game on PC.
Just look at these threads from the technical forums. Both of these guys legally bought the game and are already out of "activation" because of things as mundane as hardware change... and trying to renew them with EA's techsupport is proving quite fruitless right now.

Thanks for posting that Ludov. After a couple of hours spent reading the posts of people, and from learning that the game only allows -3- activations, it has really re-shaped my opinion of the DRM (whether it slowed down piracy for a few days or not.)

One would hope that it doesn't take EA as long as it did 2K to drop the DRM system for this title, seeing as only just recently did they finally take off the control from Bioshock recently >_<
