Bill Gates goes to Japan
Lydia Sung - Thursday, May 8th, 2008 | 1:53PM (PST)

Admits the Xbox 360 is not "big in Japan."

Hah, get it?  Big in Japan?  Okay, as long as no one understands these Initial D jokes, I'm going to keep making them.

So anyway, Bill Gates went to Japan recently and made a pretty obvious assessment -- the Xbox 360 is not Nippon's favorite toy.  This is why we all pee'd our pants when Gears of War made top 10 in Japan when it was released, surprising much of the gaming community.

Gates sounded rather optimistic when he explained the situation:

"Product share varies from country to country. In the US and the UK, the share [of Xbox 360] is high, but besides Japan, there are other areas we haven't penetrated. From now on, I think the breakthrough's going to be the online service, and you'll be surprised if you look at that."

This makes you wonder what other regions of the world the 360 may it off with.  There aren't too many places where money can be thrown away so easily on leisure products, and the 360's image will need to be altered from country to country.

I personally love the Xbox 360 (I named mine 'NAVI,' and dressed it up with some Assassin's Creed decals), but how many regions around the world can afford to throw money into the console wars?  Should Microsoft concentrate on pushing their product in Japan?  I'd love to see what more they can do with LIVE, if that's the case.

So, what did Bill go to Japan for? or was it just that he was in Japan and made the obvious statement about the 360's popularity there?

Xbox 360 is small in Japan because Japanese people don't like the word 'X' in their lounge room or bedroom perhaps!!!

Are you stupid or do you just play stupid?

Xbox has never been big in Japan. Why, well its just that both Nintendo and Sony are home grown products over there. Remember Dreamcast? Remember when that died? Painful wasn't it? Well is lived for quite a while in Japan before it wa finally dead and buried.

I guess they're just very patriotic, that and they like their games in their language and not wait for a translated version 3 months later. Xbox IS english orientated after all. Sony and Nintendo are more multi-lingual. Friendly for you and me, not just the english speakers.

All this or i just lick balls and suck ass.

Perhaps you should read the article more closely before taking on such a belligerent tone.

The real reason that Xbox has totally failed in japan is simply because of the types of games that are made for it. The Japanese dont care about FPSs the way americans do.

Nor do they care about Xbox Live or online gaming in general, which is Xbox's main selling points.

Also the marketing for anything Xbox is pretty bad...

That's not necessarily true. Japanese love to play online, however, it's in the form of MMORPG's. I know I do (:

I don't think tekmosis is saying the Xbox has worthwhile MMOs. He's probably just pointing out that online play is a viable resource that Microsoft can tap into in order to gain a firmer foothold in Japan.
