Upcoming DOOM 4 announced
Lydia Sung - Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 | 1:48PM (PST)

Yet another franchise that just won't die.

Upcoming DOOM 4 announced Image 1

id Software has announced that it has started production on the next DOOM game and is currently hiring fresh talent for the task.

“DOOM is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth.  It’s critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles," said Todd Hollenshead, id CEO.

DOOM is a practically a trademark, having once been rated “one of the ten most influential games of the decade” by PC Gamer.  But having already suffered a horrible movie adaptation and currently in line to experience a sequel, which will no doubt be just as pathetic, isn't it time to let the franchise rest?  It's had a good run.

Still, if anyone is interested in replying to id Software, here is their little pitch and contact info:

id Software is looking for talented, ambitious and passionate individuals eager to join its accomplished team of developers working on the industry’s most innovative and anticipated games. For a complete listing of available positions, visit www.idsoftware.com. Resumes can be submitted via email to jobs@idsoftware.com. All applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

A co-worker, who shall remain anonymous, had this to say about the upcoming DOOM game:

"DOOM 3 was ew....4 will be ew too I bet."

Honestly, doesn't id have anything better to do?  You know, like better games to make.  All they brought to the table in DOOM 3 was a series of cookie cutter monsters ripped out of every sci-fi horror survival etc. video game.

I dunno, I really liked Doom 3.
I wouldnt necessarily disagree with the monster thing, but thats just one aspect of the game..

Oh, and hopefully Trent Reznor gets his work put in the sound side of things this time. That would be rad.

There's nothing wrong with liking it. I personally lost interest years ago, though.

Maybe you should apply for a job there. =P

chaut if Trent Reznor is apart of it then so am I!!! <3 TR

With that aside, wasn't Doom 3 just monsters popping out of shadowy areas? And wasn't the whole engine built to create good looking shadowy areas?

Advice for Doom 4: We know you're gonna put the monsters in shadow areas so be creative!

Ya Doom 3 was sorta lame, I thought. Think with Doom was that Doom 1 was revolutionary, but by the time Doom 3 came out, things really progressed. Such as, for instance, it was now recommended to have a good plot for a FPS (partly in thanks to Half-Life.)

Anyways Doom 4 for would be cool if like, you controlled the demon army, and, you had to fight of the marines, and raid US Army bases

Now that would be fun.

First off, I will say that I do not like Doom 3 only because I first played after playing other fps and doom 3 was behind the times.

kpiess> That would be pretty cool. I'm not sure what you mean by control the demon army though. Are you taking about a squad based game or rts?

Anyway what I want Doom 4 to do things like upgrading your weapons and armor using the body parts of your enemies ( like a demon skull head on a weapon make the weapon set enemies on fire- just a random example off the top of my head). This would add in some rpg elements, which would make the game more addictive and have more replay value. Also, maybe you could bring your upgraded guy online to fight other peoples upgrade guys. That would be awesome.

Considering what it had to work with I thought the story in Doom 3 was awesome. I loved all the backstory and stuff..in a lot of ways I'd compare it to Half Life.

There was a story?

Got to admit: at the time my hardware was woefully unable to handle the game (I think I had a Radeon 8500 Le or something and p4 1.8) so I did really get that far into the game before I threw in the towel.

I can't believe some of the things people are saying. Movies don't have anything to do with the quality of the games on which the movie is based. Doom 3 did not consist of "cookie cutter monsters ripped out of Sci-Fi games, ID created these monsters long before anyone else. Doom 3 was the best game ever made and 4 will only raise the bar to a new level. *bleep* the people who wrote this article!

Yeah there was! I would say it had at least as much of a story as Half Life did, which was minimalistic kind of, but did a lot with a little, you know? I find Doom 3 similar..by backstory I meant the PDA system it had, where you could find video and audio logs left by soliders/officers that had been killed. You could read their emails and stuff too. It brought a lot of life to the game, gave it that personal touch. Very fun to listen to the audio logs while exploring/blowing stuff up.

Wonder if 2K was influenced by those audio logs in Doom 3 when they created those tapes in Bioshock...

Doom3 really wasn't that bad. It had good graphics, gameplay, sound effects. Story wasn't that great, but not all games need a great story to make it a good game.
If you don't like it, then why bother writing about it? You sure must have better things to do in your life...XD

So people like you have a reason to post comments.

JT gAnGstA I would cry if they did what you said. It feels like too many games are slapping on "RPG elements" as easy ways of getting people to play their game longer.

Xacious>By the sounds of it (I'm just getting to Bioshock myself), I would say it was definitely influenced..though Doom was probably influenced by other games too..I think I mightve seen it before.
