A new video card... sort of
NVIDIA soft-launched a new video card recently. It should be finding its way into stores virtually any moment now. The card is the 9600 GSO. By all evidence, it looks like the 9600 GSO is a rebranded 8800 GS -- a card that didn't make much of splash of its own when it was out.
This video card has the uncommon 192-bit memory interface, which in turn leads to it having the odd amount of 384MB's of GDDR3 memory. Up here in igloo, hockey sticks and Avril Lavringe country (Vancouver) local retailer NCIX has priced the Palit 9600 GSO at $135 (CDN), which seems like a fine price for this amount of power. Palit will also be selling a 9600 GSO with 768MB and higher memory clocks for about $150 (CDN).
I have not tested a 8800 GS before, so it'll be interesting to see how the 9600 GSO stacks up (particularly with the 9600 GT.) Here are the specs for the card:
| Processor Cores | 96 |
| Core Clock (MHz) | 550 MHz |
| Shader Clock (MHz) | 1375 MHz |
| Memory Clock (MHz) | 800 MHz |
| Memory Amount | 384MB |
| Memory Interface | 192-bit |
| Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) | 38.4 |
| Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) | 26.4 |
It does seem that these days, there are many good video card deals to be had, with a veritable wealth of options between $100 and $200 bucks.
Now if only there were more big PC game titles coming out we'd be all set.
