Microsoft to open retail outlets
Sean Ridgeley - Thursday, April 10th, 2008 | 1:53PM (PT)

Microsoft confirms they want to "reach out for the retail market presence"

Sources close to Fudzilla stated Microsoft indeed does want to forge a stronger bond with their retail consumers. Much like Apple has done with their Apple Retail Stores, Microsoft seems as though it will be following the same pattern.

Anyone not familiar with the Apple outlets: they essentially offer a more personalized experience, giving you the most accurate and expert information for whatever product you need assistance with. Occasionally presentations and workshops are featured as well. Essentially, it's a forum for Apple to show off their stuff, and not just products. It's effective, kind of like technical support without all the annoyances of phoning fifty different lines or waiting a day or two on an e-mail response while your main computer is busted.

Courtesy of Fudzilla:

"We can only guess that the shop will be filled with lot of software but it’s likely to include some peripheral stuff such are keyboards and mice as well as some MP3 Zune players. You can count on some computers but the last paragraph is something we suspect not something that has been confirmed."

In my humble opinion, this is a good move. Microsoft needs this. The reason Apple is as successful as it is is because it's run by people. I may not agree with everything Apple says and does, but, it's pretty hard to deny it's a more personable company. So, something like this can only be good for Microsoft, helping to lessen that hardened business image.

Micro$oft opening stores? With people trained by MS, most likely, to "help" you? Let me know were they are opening up, I need to get my Plague suite out. Anything MS related can almost never be described as "expert".

Once again, they're playing catch up. When will they ever think outside the box and do something new for once?

I'm guessing it's only for Windows. Still, it'd be great if 360 owners could take their issues to a store instead of having to call customer service and deal with sending their console in. Human contact, ftw!

    I have a Zune =)

I agree Rabid. I much prefer talking to someone in real life, than talking over phones and such. it also allows for a lot less Communication errors.

Note: My last comment applies to computers and devices you can connect to computers via USB ports, not to the 360.

Outside the box? A B&M store is original? Odd to credit Apple as the innovator, why not actually credit Gateway for doing it prior? Or is that too problematic to say that Apple *gasp* didn't do something original as well.

    Oh god stop the press!

Especially with all those ring of deaths..personally it'd make me more inclined to get a 360.

I didn't credit them as the innovator..merely stated they've done it with their stores.

Microsoft: "Apple did it. So now we have to. Kind of like with the Zune."

And isn't any Best Buy basically a Microsoft store?

I'd call Best Buy what it is: an electronic store. They sell Apple products, too.

The only thing Apple did with its iPods is popularize mp3's in the West. Companies were copying its design way before the Zune was born, hoping they can profit, so it's not really something you can pin on Microsoft (at least, not ONLY on them). Unfortunately for ourselves, American consumers are now so fixated on iProducts that we rarely look at any others, even if they're superior to Apple design.

Apple's got consumers whipped, but hey, somehow it'll always be big bad M$'s fault. I still like the idea of a Microsoft store - they should have done this sooner!

Nice job following the comments. er not following them.

"I didn't credit them as the innovator..merely stated they've done it with their stores."

Right, which is why I never addressed you to begin with.

I was addressing this silly comment.

    "Avalith

When I'm talking about your statements, you'll know it. But seeing as I rarely participate in your posts, don't count on it being anytime soon.

Agreed, dude! And there are actually a lot of products superior to Apple's designs. The iPod is popular because it looks neat and cute. What a lame reason. There are a lot of faults with the actual design of the thing..I think Creative makes way better players myself.

And I agree about people treating M$ like a whipping boy..it's easy to hate them, but what inclination will they have to become a better company if noone ever gives them a chance?

Micro$oft has plenty of chances to become a better company. They just push out products, anxious for money, not really caring about the product. Sad really.

Are they going to sell Xbox 360s in their own stores like Sony sells PS3 in their own showrooms?

VeGiTAX2, I never mentioned that Apple was being innovative when they started up the Apple stores, nor did I give them credit initially for the idea.

I cant seeing this being too popular. wouldnt this just be a smaller version of stores like best buy, staples, office depot, ect, except just selling microsoft products? and unlike apple, microsoft dosnt even have too much hardware to sell except xbox 360's (which you can get in any game store, along with some video games), and the zune. Other wise, its just software...

Well, it would be Software, maybe PCs, Tech support, maybe 360s and such. But if they do it well, and have actual trained and expert people in there, it could work out well.
