Maybe they're expecting the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 once again
The NDP Group is close to releasing its latest monthly sales report for the video game industry, and it appears Microsoft is already having a bad feeling about how the sales figures for its Xbox 360 console are going to look in February especially compared to the competition. The company addresses this in an interview with Reuters, blaming what they expect to be trailing hardware sales figures once again on hardware shortages at retail. Microsoft had previously pinpointed "supply constraints" as the major factor behind the Xbox 360's slower sales during January compared to the PlayStation 3, and the company makes no bones over how they expect the situation to continue until April at the earliest. Of course, we won't know how big the differences will actually be until NPD Group makes good with the juicy info. According to Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg:
We definitely expect we will trail in February as a result of our supply constraints... By April, we will be in a very healthy inventory situation.
Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer himself last week stated that his company was certainly not adverse to supporting Blu-ray, at least on a Windows-based PC environment. Ballmer wasn't forthcoming on whether or not this support would extend to the Xbox 360 at the time, but now the company apparently does not feel it is in any hurry to make Blu-ray playback a reality on their console anytime soon. Microsoft will instead turn its attention to digital distribution of video over Xbox Live.
Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.
