"Ghosts" released under a non-commercial Creative Commons license.
Angry and talented musician Trent Reznor has decided to release his latest album free of charge to the masses. The album is called "Ghosts", and is the first part of a four-volume album series (Ghosts I, Ghosts II, etc.) The album is available to download on this NiN website (that is currently getting hanmered with traffic), or, you can download the album guilt-free, using a Torrent tracker.
Freed from the tight constraints of music industry contracts, Trent has decided to go the Creative Commons route out of respect for the future of music-delivery: “Now that we’re no longer constrained by a record label, we’ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them.”
Trent is a self-confessed purveyor of fine illegal music, as he was quoted as saying in Herald Sun: "I steal music too, I’m not gonna say I don’t!" (Exclamation point added for emphasis.) Last year, during a tour of Australia, Trent expressed his disagreement with his record label's pricing of his last disc, "Year Zero" (which he also released later for free): "As the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more." (Source: Sydney Morning Herald.)
Following in the steps of Radiohead's release of "In Rainbows", it seems that many artists do not necessarily support the ideals and agenda of anti-music piracy coalitions, such as the RIAA.
The entire 36 track collection of new songs spread over four volumes of "Ghosts" will be available, DRM free, for the grand deal of only $5 USD, directly from Reznor and his crew. And for bigger NiN fans, you have some other options available to you: if you are a hardcore hardcore NiN fan, you can purchase a $75 Deluxe Edition of "Ghosts", and furthermore, if you are a hardcore, hardcore hardcore NiN fan, you can spend $300 bucks for an Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition "Ghosts" set that includes a signed by Trent album, some vinyl, videos, and more.
I've downloaded it off torrent and have been seeding it since, I'm probably going to throw down and get the $75 dollar version once the site runs nice and smooth.
Trent did near the same style of release with his collaborative effort with Saul Williams in "Niggy Tardust" (Also amazing if you're into hip-hop).
I am and have been a huge NIN fan for quite a few years, when Trent says "Soon" (like he did March 1st), ussualy that means within 3 years.
For anyone who is into mixing or anything related to what is put into the song, the data DVD included with album contains the multi-tracks to all 36 songs. Each individual synth, guitar, bass and drum section is available for remix.
He's had of fun with the whole giving fans the multi-tracks, you can listen to fan-made remixes spanning the past two albums on remix.nin.com
