NVIDIA's new 9xxx series road map
Kevin Spiess - Monday, February 25th, 2008 | 1:32PM (PT)

Get ready for a whole new breed, sooner then you might think.

NVIDIA's new 9xxx series road map Image 1

The ninth generation of NVIDIA's GeForce cards just hit the ground running last week with the introduction of the 9600 GT. While the 9600 GT did not bring any exceptional design changes to the table, it nonetheless proved to be a solid card for the price, competing well against the recently priced dropped HD 3850 and HD 3870 cards.

So, you might have been wondering: when are more 9xxx cards coming?

You might have heard that the 9800 GX2 is expected to drop quite soon.

But according to information released by NordicHardware, NVIDIA has a lot in store for the next 60 days, if this road map is accurate:

Card                             Core            Stream Processors GPU Clock   Memory Interface Memory Clock   Launch ,  Price
GeForce 9800GX2 G92-450   2x128      600   256-bit   2000 March 11     <$599*
GeForce 9800GTX G92-420* 128 750+ 256-bit 2200+? Late March <$399*
GeForce 9800GT G92-x 112* - 256-bit 2000? April 3  <$299*
GeForce 9600GT G94-300 64 600 256-bit 1800 Launched, $179
GeForce 9600GS G94-x - - 256-bit? - May, $159
GeForce 9500GT G96-300 48* 650* 128-bit 1800* June, $119
GeForce 9500GS G96-x 48? 600? 128-bit? 1700? July, $110?

Key:     * = Unconfirmed and may change.              ?= My complete guess.

This information is not official -- so don't throw it into the GPU bible yet. Things have been known to change.

Nonetheless, it is very interesting information.

We will keep you posted as things develop.

Hmm ... to my knowledge, the 9500GT was to have 32 stream processors ... but then, my information was also just analytical speculation (I guess to keep with the "double the performace" of the 9600 GT.) But, if that core does have 48 ... it could easily become a cheap solution for some "respectable" gameplay with DX9 games, at the lower, more common resolutions (IE: 1280x1024 or lower.)

I got say, I was impressed by what the 9600 gt did with 64 SP's. 32 SP might be able to dance, who knows.

32 sounds reasonable to me.

Hmm, why does ATI hold the only 512 bit memory interface?

Are we going to see next generation step up from 8800 Ultra? I don't need a dual gpu hog hehe.

Where's the real Nvidia next-gen?

The better question is why has ATI stopped using the 512bit memory interface in their newer models in favor of a 256bit interface.

Apparently the real next-gen is just two 8800GTS chips (GTS runs the G92 currently)

In regards to 512 bit memory interface thing, it is primarily a matter of cost: NVIDIA has been getting pretty good performance by keeping with the 256 bit memory interface, and it is cheaper than using a 512 bit memory interface, so they haven't really had a big reason to switch. This point in GPU development is all about optimization, not increasing the raw power.

Keefah -=> Wednesday will feature a review looking at this exact question.

bruceleethree -=> Don't expect any major new changes in technology for the 9xxx series. NVIDIA blew the R&D budget on the G80
