9800 GX2 rumored to be coming late March
Kevin Spiess - Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | 12:28PM (PT)

Pic, specs and rumors regarding NVIDIA's new dual-GPU solution.

Rumblings resounding across the Internets regarding the 9800 GX2 have been coming and going for awhile now. And now, as we get well into February, more semi-concrete information has been surfacing.

As you are probably aware, the 9800 GX2 is a dual-GPU, dual-PCB video card, and is a response to ATI's recent HD3870X2. While it seems all but certain that the 9800 GX2 is a dual PCB (printed circuit board) video card, with a smaller PCB and a larger PCB communicating together via a NP200-SLI bridge chip, from this recent picture leaked by Expreview, the 9800 GX2 has the appearance of a one-PCB video card:

Due to some reported engineering difficulties, and perhaps some marketing/marketplace consideration, the launch of the 9800 GX2 has been delayed somewhat, and is now reported to be coming after CeBIT, at the end of March (source).

Here is some more information, gleamed from the English version of the Chinese website Expreview:

  • Clock speeds: 600/1500/2000 (Core,Shader,Memory)
  • 1 GB of GDDR3 memory (512MB on each card)
  • 512-bit memory interface (256 bit on each card, working together)
  • 128 GB/sec memory bandwidth
  • 76.8 billion a second texture filling rate

These numbers are similar to what you'd expect from two G92 8800 GT GPU's working together for graphic good-times. Though the memory clock is up a bit.

The GPU designation for the 9800 GX2 is the G92-450. The last revised G92 GPU on the 8800 GTS 512 was the G92-400.

Needless to say, this card should be really fast. Maybe'll it be the first card capable of really getting good frames out of a detail-maxed, decent-res'ed Crysis.
