This is probably a taboo subject, simultaneously a mute point as well.

But the 360 really waned GTA4. Not only for it's inferior processing power and abilities but for the DVD format having to squish a game that should have been larger than Resistance Fall of Man @ 22GB.

GTA4 is not all it could have been thanks to the 360.

(moot point)

Yes, that has been speculated, and theorized. It is looking like the PS3 was what was holding back development though, Rockstar getting used to the hardware I assume.

I do agree that GTA IV could have been more, if it was Ps3 exclusive. But it could have been more, if it was 360 exclusive too....Each system has strengths and weaknesses, and dedicated (exclusive) console games tend to make better use of the chosen system's capabilities.

I do think the PS3 version would have been better than the 360 version (if in some alternate universes, they developed them exclusively for those platforms)....The PS3 has the edge with disk space, processing power, and being able to stream content from the HDD....

But I'm sure there will be some fanboy argument against that -_-

@tt86

I think you missed the broader point. Which is irrefutable.

And that is: Disk capacity. Space. Size of a game. If you have 50GB of space for high resolution textures, levels and side content, you virtually have a giant playpen to make a game around. Without space restriction, as game developers have so adamantly voiced already, they can make what they've always dreamed of making.

Sadly, that dream dwindles every time they have to make it cross-platform with the 360 because the XBOX is the lowest common denominator.

Hmmm sensing some ps purists in here!! actualy the game as said before was held up due to problems with development and using ps3 software/bluray! as is the norm with several ps3 games due for release, i.e if you play the new denied ops game you'll notice the obvious "rushed out" finish to the game it looks pants on the ps3

They actually wanted to make this game smaller than San Andreas so I dont believe disk space had anything to do with of a dream game.

They wanted to make the game smaller than San Andreas so there is no spot in the game where there isn't something to do. What is the point of adding a huge wilderness if there is nothing to do there?

Even though the square mileage may be smaller, the content such as character models, textures, animations etc will be much more detailed and numerous on a next gen console than on the ps2 or xbox. Thus taking up more disc space.

game engines, even on pc games are no more than a few hundred MB, then another few hundred MB of geometry models, geometry = size of playpen and detail of models, the rest of the disc is full with texture bitmaps and for any game a dvd capacity of 8 / 9 GB for textures is still an awful lot to fill, and remember when you are waiting for a game to load you are mostly waiting for these textures to be uncompressed and loaded in, for games like GTA4 there needs to be tight control of textures as they need to be streamed in as required in real-time.

so the point is that size of disc capacity has nothing to do with the size of the game world or game.

so for those that have not done their research the ps3 hard drive has a slower data transfer rate than the 360 dvd drive and the ps3 also has less gpu memory, but the hard disk has a much faster seek time. so with some cleaver programming on each version they should be about the same for streaming in textures and models.

as someone said above, the constant streaming required in GTA means constant dvd access on 360 which means a lot of horrible noise,

the 50gb bluray has one advantage in that as well as game data it can store at least a couple of hours of un;) skippable HD pre rendered cut scenes which the Japanese rpg ers demand but western players kind of hate. most decent games now use in game cut scenes which do just as well.

as an owner of both consoles I have to say that I have been very impressed with the 360 games and xbox live. my ps3 has been gathering dust and still feels like a waste of money the games that I have bought have been disappointing. I still hate MS and am still waiting for the killer ps3 game but cant see it comming yet.

the only thing that would persuade me to buy the ps3 version is the unbelievable racket 360 makes when playing a disc game.
