Apple updates include video game trademark

Maybe they'll call it 'iGame'!

Apple updates include video game trademark Image 1

Apple is seeking to update their long list of trademarks to include video games, specifically for handhelds.

The company has filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, covering "toys, games and playthings, namely, handheld units for playing electronic games; handheld units for playing videogames; stand alone videogame machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with televisions receivers only; LCD games machines, electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games."

"Playthings" sounds a little dubious, if you ask me.  That is quite a list, though it shouldn't come as a complete surprise.  Rumors that Apple would try to wiggle its way into the gaming industry have been circulating for some time now.

In fact, the 5th generation iPod already has a modest medley of supported games, provided by EA, Namco, PopCap, and FreshGames.  Various familiar titles like Tetris, Zuma, and Bejeweled have been available through iTunes for some time now, and each game costs $4.99 to download.

We all make cracks about Macs being rather impotent when it comes to gaming, but could Apple be proving us wrong with this recent activity?  Are they content with merely providing us with cute little gadgets and dancing silhouettes?  It may be too early to say for certain.

Maybe they can do something unheard of like Dual Screens, Touch screen gameplay, maybe small form factor stylish finishes, maybe a host of ways to interact with your unit like including a mic?

Or maybe they could do a widescreen multimedia device that supports output to the tv and a host of 3D gaming options in a larger form factor with a slightly failed media format.

If Apple tries to get into the portable market they'll get stomped, Nintendo has the lead in handhelds (they've had it since the inception of the gameboy) and will probably retain it for quite some time. In whatever space was left in the realm Sony seems to have picked up those users and I doubt they'll be dumping their PSP's for Bejeweled.

I agree, I reckon they have veeeery little chance of any kind success no matter how quickly the apple customer base is growing.

Apple could also be snagging the trademark to prevent other, more... enterprising types from "abusing" it with their own offerings. More rather, Apple will appreciate the ammunition to sue the pants off of anyone who will want to pull some iGames of their own, I think.

Well, that's the good news for Apple's fans. At least they can play Classic 2D games like Mario, Shinobi, Castlevania, Contra, Green Beret, Gradius and some popular Java games. If Apple tries to cross the boundary too much, they will lose enormously in gaming markets because Nintendo & Sony had already dominated the portable 3D console markets, so I don't think there is enough space for another company for portable gamings. Even the Microsoft can not compete if they want to!!!

But that's the power of the i(insert quirky name here).

Everyone will go 'zomg a new i(thing) is out that can play games. I have to get it because its an i(thing) and everyone will have one and i don't want to be uncool and not have one'.

Thats the power of Apple and its iproducts. People would actually buy it, even if they never even had a gameboy or a PSP or whatever, just because someone else has one.

the actual word mark associated with this application is simply "apple"
