World of Warcraft cult now 10M members strong
Leo Chan - Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008 | 1:38PM (PT)

"Because we all are a bit like sheep, you know..."

Blizzard's MMORPG juggernaut gathers its faithful, and what faithful there are. World of Warcraft subscription has hit a new milestone with over 10 million players worldwide. According to Blizzard's press release, just over half of these are in Asia alone (5.5 million); North America and Europe meanwhile boast 2.5 million and 2 million subscribers, respectively. That's a whole lot of subscriber fees they're raking in!

"It's very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we're looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead."

World of Warcraft is currently available in seven languages, with a Russian version in development and scheduled for release later this year. In addition to North America and Europe, World of Warcraft is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

WoW has 5.5 million gold farmers? Nice.

Why do people pay for this game!?!? Also, who the hell owns it!?!? I want some of that money!

Blizzard owns it.

BTW, was it truly necessary to refer to WoW as a cult?

Yes, it was nessisary. lol. Those people who play it have an odd paste like complexion. lol.

Blizzard is "owned" by Vivendi, which is now merged with Activision, and therefore the company that "owns" Blizzard is called Activision Blizzard. Yes, the name is weird, but when Vivendi merged with Activision, thats just what they changed the name to. It's listed on the NASDAQ as ATVI.

A year ago, I would never have imagined I'd be one of those 10 million.

$150,000,000 / month... *dies*

that doesn't of course include unit sales for the original game and expansions, and of course the $1.99 demo discs for trial accounts.

lol. I beleive Vegitax just turned Green [moldy green after death green] with envy, yes?

Not really, I think I just threw up in disgust with how much money they made off a game they really haven't done much with for years now, yes they add some quests and a purdy new expansion but, wow. I guess I know how they can keep delaying Starcraft II and every other title now. They're pretty much walking in to work and rolling in money while they hire a chimp to code for them.

lol. Chimps are out of fashion as coders, they use Elbonians for that now. [See dilbert comics]. Also, honestly, I can really understand how that kind of profit can make one sick..I mean REALLY!

With the profit margin over a year they could easily hire back the old teams and churn out Starcraft II, Diablo 3 and Starcraft ghost making everyone happy.

As far as I know right now they're on record despite having a working playable build of SC2 with a release date of it's done when it's done. Diablo 3 is just a magical rumor and Starcraft Ghost is pretty much locked up 20 stories down and probably wont be allowed to see daylight for a few decades. In the meantime they'll still be working on what seems like a low delivery for content in the new WoW expansion sometime this year I believe.

Yeah, Rath of the Lych king. Honestly, I think they need to stop building crap for it. The engine is Horrid after the time it has been out, and with how expensive things are becoming $3.00 for gallon of gas? $5.00 for a gallon of Milk!?!?!? I think they could take that $150,000,000 a month and dump it back into the freakin Economy!

WoW's okay. It has its perks over other MMO's but it's definitely overrated.

I agree with VegitaX2, blizzard is profiting immensely on a half-decent game because of their marketing ability, not dedication to fans. They make the game gradually easier to play with every patch and the content they add never reaches new heights.

The fact that they're making so much off of it and not doing anything new is dissatisfying.

Though a respectable company, WoW doesn't cut it for me. I'm a huge fan of Warcraft but WoW isn't what it should be.

Bizzard makes a lot of money off of WoW, but don't forget that a sizable chunk of that $150,000,000 goes to maintenance. I don't know the infrastructure of WoW servers, but my expectation is each server is really an entire room of servers with 20 db servers each. All this being backed up frequently in a storage system that is 100's of terabytes.... mulitply all that by the number of servers and it can add up.

Of course, I also have no patience for WoW either. Their servers are getting laggy and crashing and queues are forming. At least Blizzard can't say they can't afford to upgrade servers

ANd of course, this begs the question, why not make WoW two, and IMPROVE!?

I don't see a need for WoW II. As far as the issues huntyr brings up, the game is constantly patching (though not as often as, say, Guild Wars). I do have a beef with the torrent method of dl'ing patches, though.

If you're not an avid WoW fan, I don't see why you'd be so upset over these issues, though. And it doesn't seem like you ARE one of those fans, Joe.

Just wait for Starcraft II if you're that heartbroken over it.

The game is updating yes, but the servers are getting more and more laggy which has nothing to do with a patch but hardware upgrades

So I've heard some people complain. I haven't had any problems post holidays, though, so I had assumed they fixed the issue.

Its happened a lot more recently on Whisperwind where I am. at least once in a 2 hour period the entire server lags and no one can do anything for 5-10 min

lol. One more reason to let it die.

"$150,000,000 goes to maintenance"

You realize this is $150 million per month right? not year. Month. If they're spending $150m a month on server items, then they better have virtually non-existent waiting lines, dedicated download servers instead of P2P and a lot more going on for the users.

huntyr
Yes I do, but I actually said "a sizable chunk of that $150,000,000 goes to maintenance". I have no idea how much the infrastructure costs but server racks are not cheap. Thats part of my beef with Blizzard, with the cash they are getting, I have a much higher expectation level.

My server is fine, they release a decent amount of new stuff for me. I don't know about you but I don't spam the game so much that I reach the end in 3 months, so even when the new expansion comes out I wouldn't have done everything they have to offer yet. Also calling it a cult can be kind of insulting, there is too much crap going around making it seem like EVERY WoW player is an addict already.

Fog, I do not play WoW, Not owrth it for me.

It's hard to wrap your head around how much money Blizzard must rake in with WoW.

Whatever their next MMORPG will be, it's going to be nuts. Crazy nuts. No more than ever, they can easily afford to have a veritable army of programmers and artists and such to make games that'll continue to blow the top off the entire entertainment industry.
