R4 chip a potential threat to Nintendo
Lydia Sung - Monday, November 26th, 2007 | 3:35AM (PT)

This huge threat comes in a tiny package...

For many of us, the R4 chip is certainly not old news.  What we may not have realized is how much of an impact this tiny chip, just a few centimeters long and several millimeters thick, is having on Nintendo.

The R4 (Revolution for DS) is essentially a storage device for the Nintendo DS, and though the device itself is not illegal, what people wind up using it for is.  Available for $40 to $50 USD (roughly), it is an easy way for gamers to download countless illegally cracked game titles as well as other material.

In the Akihabara electronics district of Tokyo, the R4 just recently went on sale and is one of the most sought after gifts for Christmas.  Stores openly advertise for the chip but retain a certain level of ambiguity about the whole thing, with signs reading, “New R4 shipment has finally arrived! You know what it does! Absolutely no questions will be answered concerning this product...” or "Guaranteed for one week only! Of course we can’t explain what the R4 will do..."

DS games often become available for download on the internet just days before the official versions are released.

With 35 millions DS users around the world, the R4 can potentially deal a heavy blow to Japan's third most valuable listed company.  A Nintendo spokesperson has said, “We are keeping a close eye on the products and studying them. But we cannot smash all of them."

I have seen the R4 in action this summer. I was appalled that people can use it to download any DS game they want. Not only does this hurt the DS, but it could damage the system it self. When owners get there R4 they need to download a program, that overrides the programing of the system. Anything that intentionally overrides the program of the system immediately voids the warrenty. Personally I go by the old school method, if it isn't licensed by Nintendo it doens't go in my system.

It seems traditional media outlets are kinda behind the times. The R4 is certainly one of the more popular models but given the large variation of chips that have been available for over a year now, it doesn't seem to be impacting them to the point where N is going to break because of it.

They'll always be stomping out piracy though, they still do for NES cart dumps and they'll continue to do so for all their systems.

The R4 doesn't affect the DS at all, it simply skips the selection screen when you turn it on. The DS itself is completely untouched.

You didn't hear this from me >.>

The R4 has definitely been around for a while, but to see it advertised in Japan with that nudge-nudge-wink-wink attitude is actually quite amusing. And is that the Vocaloid character on that sign in the source link?!?

chris:

You might be thinking of the older versions of the M3, where you could flash your DS firmware so you didn't need a Passcard in slot-1.

The R4 is in slot-1 so you don't need to do anything like that.

BTW, I am getting a DS Lite Crimson and Black, along with something that's in this title...

I'm selling my DS phat and something with it ... to my brother.

Don't think bad of me!

You're almost on with the descriptions down there, my friend was in the market for a cartridge that goes in slot-1 but he wasn't sure what it did, I think he did obtain it and something else that goes in it and now he's currently figuring out the limits of that thing that went in there.

I currently have an R4. I use AIM/MSN messengers on it, linux, and VNC viewer for fun. I also use it for an MP3 and Podcast player.

Wow I didn't know you could put VNC viewer on DS, that would be cool!

I watch movies on mine, since I just converted 300, Super Troopers, Beerfest, etc...

Ooops, I hope that is not against any laws?

I can also view manga on it, listen to music, and play games. What fun!
