S3 trying to get back into the GPU game?
William Henning - Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 | 3:25PM (PT)

S3 Graphics planning to launch two new GPU's

Is S3 trying for a comeback?

Digitimes reports that S3 Graphics is planning to bring out two GPU's by the end of this year:

  • S3 Chrome 460 - DX10, 90nm process, max 1GHz core speed, PCIe 1.0, HDMI, HDCP
  • S3 Chrome 430 - DX10.1, 65nm process, max 1GHz core speed, PCIe 1.0, HDMI, HDCP

Apparently the 460 is aimed at the mid-range market - and presumably hopes to compete with the 8600GT / 2600 HD, and the 430 will try for the entry level market.

If that is true. Why would anyone want to buy the mid-range card when the entry one is better?

This article is the most screwy one I have seen in a while. The source article is just like this, so if anyone thinks there's typos there's not because that's what I was thinking.

One thing is for sure, S3 is not trying for a comeback. When I last spoke to them they are firmly gunning for a solid low end to midrange penetration. They just don't have the capabilities to really push any higher. Still, in spite of the fact that ATI/NVIDIA get all the limelight they seem to have found a niche market and have been able to continue to churn out new iterations of their products so all the more power to them.

Twizttid13-=> The article states that they'll have "maximum core frequencies" of 1 GHZ -- so they might not be set at the same clock speeds. Also, as you probably already know, the core frequency is just one of many factors that determine overall GPU performance. So, for example, the S3 460 could have a gig of GDDR4 memory and 256 bit memory interface, while the 430 could have the same clock speed, but have 256 mb of GDDR3 memory and a 128 bit memory interface (or whatever).

I'm glad that S3 is going to throw some cards out. I think there is an opening for them if they move quick, because many ppl are not very impressed with the performance of the hd 2600 / 8600 gt/gts cards.

@kspiess I get what your saying but that still doesn't explain the 90nm and 65nm difference. Almost forgot, DX10 and DX10.1 also.
