500GB+ crammed onto a regular HD DVD using microholographic technology
Kevin Spiess - Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 | 12:39PM (PT)

Holographic optical drives not too far off

Squeezing massive quantites of data onto optical media with holographic technology is not new, but recently, researchers found a method of doing this with regular HD DVDs.

The good news came from the University of Berlin, where smart-folk developed a new microholographic recording method that can put nanostructures into the entire volume of a DVD, not just on the surface, in order to store data. This research effort has been named the "Microholas project." The project was started about 3 years ago, and it appears that it is a total success: the prototype can microholographinize 500 gigs onto a disc, and the researchers believe that reaching the 1 TB mark is very much possible.

Question...Can this be done with Blu-Ray too?

Apparently yes. Good ole holograms don't discriminate against formats.

What's the size edge with blu'? Any estimates?

About 750 hours of standard definition porn. Maybe 250 to 350 hours of 1080p hi-def XXX.

I guess regular family movies would use the same amount of space. :-\

Wonder how much this would add to a CD-R. :S

Who needs to store 500GB of data on a disk anyway? I'm doing good if I can fill half of 500GB of harddrive space...

Some people may not need the space, but is sure is nice to have the technology now.

500 GB R/W optical drives are closer than you might think. The neat thing with this 'mircoholas' project was that they used regular hd dvds. But other projects, using the same sort of technology but with improved'n'specialized optic discs, are being developed by the big guys, and are a lot closer to hitting hardware stores than you might think.

A 500 gb R/W drive would be so sweet. I think Micah had a good point though... they should switch from using 'gigabytes' to measure storage capacity, and instead use a hour(s) of porn measurement scale.
