Blockbuster chooses to go with Blu-ray over HD DVD
Kevin Spiess - Monday, June 18th, 2007 | 10:38AM (PT)

Blu-ray +1, HD DVD -1

A significant battle in the format wars was fought today.

Blockbuster -- the largest chain of video game and DVD rental shops in the world -- has decided to chose the Blu-ray format, over HD DVD, for their future stock choices. This decision might prove to be a decisive blow against HD DVD.

Since late last year, Blockbuster has been offering both formats to its customers. Blockbuster has stated that customers chose Blu-ray movies over HD DVD titles more than 70% of the time. Matthew Smith, Blockbuster's senior vice president of merchandising told the Associated Press: "The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing."

Similar to the Beta versus VHS format war from 20 years ago, both formats are wrestling each other to become the new marketplace standard for optical media. Since the beginning of the year, Blu-ray has been outselling HD DVD titles, as well as offering a larger selection of titles.

Ken Graffeo, the co-president of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group, was not pleased with Blockbuster's change of position. He said that "trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying."

At least for now, Blockbuster will continue to offer HD DVD titles at 250 stores. But for exactly how long the HD DVDs will be available for rent has not been publicly determined.

This makes me feel ill in so many ways.

And it's not in any fanboy perspective.

It's common sense folks. If you are going to get into the high def world, you're going to paying craploads already, right? So from that standpoint, money isn't by majority, a problem.
That in mind, you're going to go for the highest possible quality you can, and that's Blu-Ray. Why would Blockbuster, catering to the Hi-Def crowd, waste even more money trying to get triple versions of the same movie? You're either going DVD, or High-Def, and if going High-Def, as the numbers state, Blu-Ray's on top for quality.

Some of yas may loathe blu-ray. Stop being so g'd'mned scared of the future. People were freaking terrified of Laser Disc and DVD when they were released, same for Betamax over VHS. I'd like to think the choices over technology have become much easier by now, but apparently many of us are still thick as bricks. :\

Thank the maker for the forerunners of technology, paving the way for improvements. Over the last 200 years we've advanced more than we ever have technology-wise. I'm not one to agree on slowing down.

I guess I'll explain more, but my opinion will be limited to further explanation on what Blockbuster's plan is.

But really now, you speak of the future, but are you, by any way, possibly LIKE to spend about 1 grand or 600 (maybe less in the future, if you're talking about the PS3), to replace every appliance that comes compatible with the DVD? Sure, progress is fine and dandy, but it's sure as hell best when it's subtle. For example, at the initial release of the DVD, combinations of both DVD and VHS attachments were given, which I still possess. I'm still confused to what point you were attempting to make, so if you can explain further (right now, you kind of sound like a fanboy, as this I would think is more of an issue of lucrative decisions and the convenience of the public), that'd be fine.

I realize this isn't anybody's doing, but rather Blockbuster's decision. Once again, I'll put a more ornate opinion when I find out how exactly they're going to do this, but they better make it appealing to the general audience. Need proof of shoving it down people's throats too much sometimes? The general public and Windows Vista.

blockbuster had hd-dvd?? they didnt in any of my local stores. as far as your arguments about hi-def. most hdtvs out there right now are 1080i not 1080p. 1080p is a very new thing in comparison. according to national sales records blu-ray and hd-dvd are neck and neck neither one winning so far. i for one am getting the lg dual format player.
