The latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3 (version 1.70) will allow the console to play PSone game titles downloaded from the online PlayStation Store. Existing PS1 game downloads are still restricted to playback on the PlayStation Portable, as these downloads must be made to support playback on the PS3 first before console owners can enjoy them on their televisions. Currently, PS3-compatible PSone games do not exist for purchase on the PlayStation Store, but Sony Computer Entertainment will likely update existing and future downloads in order to enable PS3 support.
PS1 save files can also be transferred to the PSP from the PS3 thanks to the 1.70 firmware update, so under ideal conditions gamers can get their PS1 gaming fix at home and outside. Additionally, force-feedback support will now be enabled in (third-party) PS1/PS2 peripherals for PS1/PS2 gameplay on the PS3.
