Vista exclusive games suck, but can't be helped.
J. Micah Grunert - Monday, April 9th, 2007 | 1:14PM (PT)

Company of Heroes 2 will become a Windows Vista only game. Does tha bite or what?

It's kinda expected that with new hardware comes new software and new games. Case in point being Company of Heroes. Last years award winning RTS WW2 game has been touted one of the most visually stunning games to grace the screens of PC gamers. And of course, there's a sequel in the works. Set to be released around the third quarter of this year, CoH2 will be even better, if you have Vista.

Thats right, CoH2 is going to be a Windows Vista exclusive game. No versions for XP and probably no versions for any console (besides, playing top down RTS games on with a joy-pad sucks, mouse and keyboard forever). New video cards, like the Nvidia 8800 core and the upcoming ATI 2900 GPU should push the graphics envelope for game designers. Furthermore, DX10 is a Vista exclusive. Shader Model 4.0 will also be DX10 bound, and therefore, a Vista exclusive graphics extension.

Yeah, it ticks me off to! I prefer a slimmed down XP install to the bloated and seemingly schizophrenic Vista OS. I've played with Vista, and I hate it. Honestly, it's nothing new, and nothing that hasn't been done in Apple OSX or Linux for years prior. And I really hate how Vista always wants to double check with me when I run some application or install some program. "Are you sure you want to connect to the Internet, are you sure you want to install this program, are you really sure you want to shut down?"

Unfortunately, the old adage of 'Upgrade or Die!' seems to ring true with Vista. If we want to play those hot new games games, we're going to have to shell out some big bucks for Vista. Halo 2 is going to have a Vista only port, and when Halo 3 comes to life, it will most likely (most defiantly) be a Xbox 360 and Vista only game. Future games, like the highly anticipated Crytek game Crysis, will probably be a Vista game too.

I hate to say it, but this is looking like the end of high-end gaming for XP.

Crysis is in development for Windows XP and for Vista. It is not a "Vista only" game.

They could always change their minds at the last minute and make it Vista only. But if Crytek does release both an XP and Vista version, it will help sales. Having Vista only platform sales hurts the profit margins of a game development company.

Case in point being the iPod. What if Apple had said no to making it compatibel with Windows and insisted that you would have to buy a Mac if you wanted to use an iPod. The iPod would have been crippled by every other portable music player out there.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is probably keeping the likes of Halo 2 and 3 Xbox 260 and Vista exclusive to help bolster Vista sales. It's unfair! XP users want to play these games too.

You're gonna need Vista to enable DX10 graphics in Crysis anyway.

Some people have said that DirectX9.0c is DirectX 10, but I've seen graphics comparisons, and it isn't.

Guess I'll have to build a pimped rig and throw Vista onto it to get DX10 graphics. But if the only thing you would use Vista for is DX10 gaming, then use some swappable SATA drive bays. Have one for Vista, one for XP, and one for Linux. A quick shut down and drive swap to the other OS would be easy. Hey, you could even have one drive with Win98 on it. Maybe even WinME. Wait, Windows Millennium blows with the force of a catagory 5 hurricane. Scratch that idea.

I guess Microsoft will get a few of my hard earned dollars after all. They already got some for my copy of Flight Stimulator 10.

Well I don't want to move to Vista, mainly because I'll have to get more money put into the computer to upgrade it.

Besides, I heard people say that Vista won't allow all games to work?

    [Well mainly some MM/ORPG's]

The next product in the CoH franchise is not Vista-exclusive, that I can guarantee you (as I'm working on it...). Yes it *supports* DirectX 10 and Vista, but it also supports DirectX 9 and XP just like the original product did.

Read the press release for CoH: Opposing Fronts (IT IS NOT CoH 2!).
