What? We can copy DVDs? Sort of?
J. Micah Grunert - Friday, August 11th, 2006 | 2:23PM (PT)

The movie industry takes a step back, relaxing in relation to copying DVDs.

We have all heard the horror stories of how the RIAA and MPAA thoroughly despise anyone making illegal (and even legal) copies of their copyrighted material. It seems however, that the movie industry might be starting to relax a little.

According to the Seattle Post and Intelligencer, the DVD Copy Control Association (let's just call them the Crazy Copyright Cabal) is set to lighten up. They are considering to lift or relax some of the legal obstructions surrounding the recording of movies to blank DVD media.

This of course doesn't mean that you, or I, or anyone for that matter can start renting and riping DVDs. Nor can we legally file share or Bit Torrent films. The move is to try and help retailers. There has been proposal that movie jukebox kiosks could help to bolster DVD sales. Essentially, a type of vending machine that would have a computer and massive hard drive in it. The drive would contain the image files for hard to find films. Drop in a few bucks, pick the movie you want through an on screen menu, and you'll have a burned copy of that movie in a couple minutes. From a legal perspective, no one would be breaking any laws. The video vending machine might even print the title on the DVD, any maybe even a custom slip cover for you film.

It may not seem to be a complete retraction of the movies studios attitudes toward movie copying, but it's a start. Unfortunately, new methods of copy protection will come hand in hand.

It it still quite difficult to rip a legally download movie to DVD or some other device, or even another computer. That's where CSS, or the Content Scramble System comes into play. It's kinda like Macrovision, but more recent. Conceivably, this will make it far more difficult to copy copy protected movies to blank media. Movie studios and DVD manufacturers have license for CSS, and try to employ it through any number of means.

The Brave New World is one movie that will come with such protection enabled. The idea is that it will make the content harder to recopy afterward. CSS is licensed by the studios to the makers of DVD players by the DVD Copy Control Association.

Apparently, now the Association is working with disk makers to produce CSS-compatible blank DVDs. The DVD Copy Control Association apparently wants DVD media manufacturers to start making CSS compliant media, simply to try and help stem what ever measure or copyright infringement may or may not take place.
