Mystery E3 GameCube units were pseudo-Wii then?
Thanks to some saavy shutterbugs, reports have surfaced on the web suggesting Nintendo didn't actually have any working Wii consoles at last week's E3. Instead, the Wii demonstrations people were lining up to play with were actually running on current-generation GameCube hardware. Nintendo has since come forward to clarify that while GameCube hardware was present, it's actually modified with components more in line with what we can expect for the Wii:
Nintendo confirmed that they did indeed use GameCube housing, but that the "guts" or internal architecture was certainly from the Wii. "The Wii hardware we exhibited at E3 2006 was made specifically for the E3 show and is not the final mass-production version. Some of this hardware was cased in Nintendo GameCube housing," the company explained.
On the flip side, this implies what E3 goers were experiencing was not wholly indicative of the Wii, despite it documented lack of muscle. Of course this will depend on how much more work can be done with the Wii at this stage before its scheduled Q4 launch.
It's not always about pretty graphics and sound, and even games like Playstation are running out of new ideas. The Wii is a completely new spin, just be glad Nintendo isn't a shallow company bent on money grubbing, for the newest approaches they are the cheapest prices, with sensors, before they had touch screen, they will be the first ones to use holograms.
Playstation is so pretty eh? Why did they still end up pulling a last minute ripoff out of their ass and now have motion sensitive controllers? THE GAME THAT DEMOED IT SUCKED TOO. Whatever, frankly people, shut up sit down and enjoy the ride.
Nintendo is the cheapest for the most revolutionary product. For the casual gamer even those who never play and come to your house will want to pick this up. Take your megapixels and shove it if your bent on that 2% performance increase.
Revolution creates a NEW scale
Wii won Best of Show and Best Hardware in the Game Critics Best of E3 Awards because they did something different, and provided a spectatcular gaming experience.

Oh and read on and see that Nintendo actually won 3 other awards in areas no one expected them to win, despite having much less visual appeal. Go figure.
