TDK starts mass producting Blu-ray media
William Henning - Monday, April 10th, 2006 | 4:27PM (PT)

TDK starts shipping blank Blu-ray media

Now we just need the recorders - at reasonable prices.

TDK has started shipping 25GB Blu-ray blank media.

Single BD-R disks will sell for $19.99, and single BD-RE (rewritable) for $24.99

They plan to ship 50GB media later in the year, with preliminary pricing being $47.99 for the BD-R and $59.99 for BD-RE

At those prices, I don't think I'll be getting any.

Lately, I've been getting 100 disk DVD-R spindles for about $30 (name brand ones); which works out to $0.30/4.7GB

Now that's $0.0638 per GB, so scaling to 25GB would be about $1.60.

Granted, they have to pay for new plants for prodcuing the new disks, however $20/blank seems .. excessive. I expect competition from other media manufacturers will bring the prices down to the $5/disk level fairly quickly; if it does not, it is possible that no one will adopt Blu-Ray.

It'll fly, i'm sure of it.
I'm still surprised the price for dvd media has dropped dramatically since it was first tossed onto the market. Granted it still wasn't as expensive as blu-ray, but then again, 4.7 is hardly blu ray capacity.
