IBM finally kills OS/2, suggests OS/2 users migrate to Linux
There must have been some combined cheering and cursing in Redmond.
The reason for cheering:
IBM has finally given up on OS/2, and has announced that it will no longer sell or support it.
The reason for the cursing:
IBM suggests that OS/2 users migrate to Linux.
NOT Windows.
Mind you, OS/2 has been a marginal player for years. I used to develop software for it, and it actually was quite a decent system - with significantly better performance and some higher end features compared to Windows NT 3.51 (prevelant version of NT at the time I was developing for OS/2)
But IBM's marketing of it was lackluster.
So say "Rest In Piece" to OS/2... and welcome the Penguin!
But honestly, even though I had tinkered it before and one of my best friends used it in the mid 90s, the OS/2 is so marginal I completely forgot about its existence and historical context until now.
