Onboard graphics for the most part, just plain, flat out sucks. Nvidia raised the bar with the NForce IGP with the integrated GF2MX the subsequent GF4MX but even then, the DX7 core was pretty long in the tooth. However, it has not had a lot of challengers in terms of onboard graphics power but that may soon change. The Inquirer is reporting that ATI's upcoming RS400 and RS480 will feature an integrated 9600XT, a vast step up from the GF4MX.
Both of those chipsets are able to run all top three games including Doom 3, Far Cry and Half Life 2 at playable frame rates just using the power of chipset graphics. We havent any specifics what playable frame rates are, but we suspect 24 plus FPS.This sounds very promising if it comes to fruitition. 24FPS is nothing to sneeze at as some of the current budget 3D cards are only pulling roughly 30FPS in games like DOOM 3.
