Didn't quite make it with the ApeXtreme, so VIA readies to test the waters of a new market?
CPU core logic chipset and mini-ITX motherboard designer VIA Technologies previously had hoped to make greater strides in the gaming market through Apex Digital's ApeXtreme "PC gaming console". However, this plan appeared to lose some steam in the end after Apex itself revealed that the ApeXtreme would contain no VIA components at all (news). TechBits.ca writes that VIA is still not willing to give up on deliver its own device for the gaming masses, though the new market they apparently plan to penetrate is a surprising one: handheld gaming.
"Following on the introduction of the 'Glory' Personal Gaming Platform, VIA Technologies is set to introduce a new handheld device at E3. The specifications for the device have not been finalized, although the processor is anticipated to be a x86 NanoBGA processor. These processors are available at 533, 800, and 1000 Mhz. The handheld should have advanced network capabilities, and being based on x86 architecture it is anticipated that it will be able to play PC titles. Obviously it will not be running Doom3, but with thousands of available titles and the networkability, this device would allow for playing of 2D and some 3D PC titles.
"
Unfortunately it is much too early for further specs to emerge, and it's not even known how VIA plans to manufacturer and promote the device. Indeed, it has not been cofirmed whether VIA plans on tackling the same handheld gaming market that Nintendo and Nokia (and soon Sony with their PlayStation Portable) have always been duking it out in. We shall likely discover more on where VIA truly plans to go with such a device once E3 finally hits later this month.
