As part of the run up to the release of Forza Horizon 2 on September 30. Microsoft has announced a free-to-play weekend for the previous iteration in the franchise, Forza Motorsport 5. The free-to-play weekend is live right now on Xbox One for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers, having begun earlier today, and is set to run right through to 11:59pm PDT on Sunday September 7. Which works out at 7:59am GMT on Monday September 8 for anyone in the UK.
The free-to-play weekend grants Gold members complete access to Forza Motorsport 5 and all of its features. Players can check out the online modes and the much lauded Drivatar system which sees the AI replicate a player's driving style to create much more realistic race opponents. Any achievements unlocked and Gamerscore accumulated will carry over once the weekend is completed.
There is also a special endurance race challenge running throughout the weekend which tasks players with taking on the Grand Tour of Prague. A new Forza Motorsport 5 profile title and badge will be awarded to those who complete the event and drive at least 130 miles during the race.
Although Forza Motorsport 5 is not the direct predecessor to the upcoming Forza Horizon 2, it is the flagship title in the Forza series and holds the record for the fastest-selling racing game on Xbox. Despite the imminent arrival of Forza Horizon 2 it is still more than worth giving Forza Motorsport 5 some time and anyone with a Gold subscription has no excuse not to this weekend.
The hope really is that this sort of thing becomes a regular occurrence, with more games being offered for free weekend sessions. Forza Motorsport 5 can be downloaded via the Xbox Store anytime from 12:01am PDT Thursday, September 4 until 11:59pm PDT on Sunday, September 7.
