It was truly a match for the ages. Cloud 9 met Team SoloMid in the finals of League of Legends' Summer Split, their third finals match-up in the past three splits. Up until yesterday Team SoloMid had been unable to take even a single playoff game away from Cloud 9, but a three-peat for the defending North American champions was not meant to be. Team SoloMid proved the strongest in a grueling best-of-five series, defeating Cloud 9 3-2.
Cloud 9 started strong on the back of Hai's terrifying Zed play. However, whenever Team SoloMid was able to get Hai off of Zed and onto either Yasuo or Orianna, things didn't go so well. It's also worth noting that the team with the more aggressive team composition seemed to win every single game. When it came down to the wire, however, it was a single Purple Caster minion blocking a rocket from Sneaky's Corki that decided the match. Had the rocket gone through, killing WildTurtle, the final fight of the final game would have almost certainly gone Cloud 9's way and we might have another champion. That's just how close this best-of-five was.
Don't feel too bad Cloud 9 fans, because both Team SoloMid and Cloud 9 have earned spots in the League of Legends 2014 World Championship. They'll be joined by LMQ who placed third with their own hard-fought victory over Curse. Three North American teams battling it out to prove they deserve more respect than their weekly Riot placements would imply. Their placements in the group stage of the World Championships will be announced next Monday, September 8.
That marks the end of League of Legends' 2014 Summer Split. Congratulations to Team SoloMid, who overcame the adversity of a roster shake-up over the past few months to take down their greatest play-off rival. Congratulations to Cloud 9 for coming back from Hai's serious health condition and proving they won't settle for anything except contending to be the best. Both teams can look forward to a higher standard of competition going forward, which means both teams can only get better from here on.
