Okay, so I'm really excited about this Hyrule Warriors announcement, but I'm not entirely sure what it is. Give me a bit of ambiguity room here, okay? During today's Nintendo Direct it was revealed that the game would feature an all new Adventure Mode, unique to Hyrule Warriors and likely made with direct help from Ninintendo. They might as well rename it Nostalgia Mode, because it's a huge throwback to the original Zelda.
Adventure Mode opens into a huge grid-based map. Each section of the grid is, according to Nintendo, associated with a challenge. Completing a challenge will further unlock portions of the grid, as well as potentially unlocking characters and weapons to play with that can't be acquired elsewhere in the game. What are these challenges? Well, some look like they're from the original Zelda and some look like they take place in the Hyrule Warriors universe. I can't really say what oddball challenges are lined up.
I personally can't get over this freakin' grid map. It's a throwback to that old classic Zelda experience where the player walks from screen to screen searching for different things to do, puzzles to solve, enemies to destroy and treasure to discover. Some of the map is even inaccessible before acquiring certain items! All glory to the Adventure Mode, providing a classic Zelda experience when Nintendo has otherwise given up on it.
Hyrule Warriors is a Wii U exclusive which will be available starting September 26 in North America, September 19 in Europe and September 20 in Australia.
