Tales fans, rejoice! Bandai Namco of Europe released two new character focus trailers for Tales of Xillia 2 earlier today - one for Alvin, a mercenary living life on the road from Tales of Xillia, and Elize and her purple, floating friend, Teepo. When will we be getting a trailer featuring only Ludger's cat, Rollo, and why is there not a stuffed Teepo with the Day One Edition?
Tales of Xillia introduced two robust, neighboring worlds known as Rieze Maxia and Elympios. The original Xillia title tells the story of Jude and Milla as they meet up with many companions and travel to stop the ultimate destruction of all mana, or magic, within both worlds. Tales of Xillia 2 takes place one year after the events of the first title and introduces players to Ludger, a young man out to solve a mysterious crime for which his brother Julius was framed.
As Ludger travels accompanied by a young girl he rescued from a train wreck named Elle, he meets up with the main party from the original Xillia. This includes Elize and Alvin, both being returning characters. Alvin's backstory involves the survival of his homeland, Elympios, and a group called Exodus. As he meets up with the party he is a changed man and he believes there is a way for both Rieze Maxia and Elympios to survive, and perhaps return mana to his long-dry home. To avoid major spoilers for Tales of Xillia, skip the first ten seconds of the Alvin character trailer.
Similar to Alvin, Elize always lived an isolated life, one which she has slowly grown out of during and following the events of Xillia. With original Xillia protagonist Jude's help, she decided to attend school and is now a goodwill ambassador for Rieze Maxia. Unfortunately, a Spyrix, or mana-substitute machine, in Elympios was attacked by members of Exodus, thereby trapping her inside while she visits to promote peaceful relations between the two worlds. Using her small friend, Teepo, Elize is able to easily fight her way through the factory now teeming with monsters, and meet up with the group. Players are given their first glance of Elle's relationship with Elize when it turns out that the young girl is not too fond of Teepo and his spunky personality.
Tales of Xillia 2 features an evolved form of the battle system found in Tales of Xillia known as XDR-LMBS, or Cross Dual-Raid Linear Motion Battle System. As such, Alvin and Elize maintain their fighting styles that were originally established in the first title. Alvin, a brute swordsman with slight ranged attacks, is seen using many of his traditional attacks, or Spirit Artes, as well as his Mystic Arte, or strongest attack. Elize, with Teepo by her side, is seen using many of her Teepo-themed melee attacks, as well as her long-ranged spells, showcasing her varied battle styles. Both characters may use Linked Artes by linking up with each other to create powerful attacks, many of which are staples in the Tales series, including Pow Hammer. Xillia veterans may note that both trailers highlight a boss that was previously believed to be killed during the first title.
Bandai Namco has given Tales fans far too much to look forward to in just two small trailers. Tales of Xillia 2 will launch exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 3 on August 22, 2014, though that is not the only title in the series coming soon - Tales of Zestiria will also launch worldwide for the PlayStation 3 in 2015. As an avid Tales fan, I currently have more excitement than I can contain.
