It's been some time since Rift's last major expansion was released -- over two years, in fact. Storm Legion showed the passion and dedication of the Trion Worlds team, building hugely on the already sizable game. Yet here we are years later wondering what's next for the MMO, especially now that it faces huge challenges from multiple fronts as the MMO wars are reaching a new peak. Today, in a producer's letter to the community, we know what's next. Introducing "Nightmare Tide", Rift's next major expansion will be launched later this year.
Rift Executive Producer Bill Fisher provided the following insight into why his MMO will be heading out of the frying pan and into the flames with "Nightmare Tide":
"In the wake of the great invasions, I recall thinking to myself: When will we take the fight beyond the rifts and see where these terrible planar horrors are coming from? What do the realms of the Blood Storm look like? Are there more terrible foes than the dragons lurking in the depths of the planes?"
Bill claims that this upcoming expansion will answer all of those questions and more, while providing a deeper look at the "nightmares, dreams, madness and danger" lurking in the depths left Akylios. Dungeons, raids, raid rifts, and slivers await and of course it will all be free, as Rift has made the full transition to a free-to-play game.
Here are some other additions to the game in Nightmare Tide for fans to look forward to:
- Nightmare Rifts: Rifts that scale difficulty and produce near endless waves of content to fight against.
- Minions: An account-wide collectible which can be sent out on missions, gather resources, and gain their own levels.
- Level Cap Raised to 65: Five more levels will be added in Nightmare Tide
- Equipment Slots: Unlockable via digital edition purchase, or through gameplay in Nightmare Tide
- Tons of Loot
Finally, Bill wanted to remind current Rift players that they won't have to wait for Nightmare Tide for exciting new content. Update 2.7, Binding of Blood, is ongoing, Summerfest will be starting before too long, and an all new Warfront, The Blighted Antechamber, will be added down the line. Finally, Update 2.8, Madness Wakes, will also be launched before Nightmare Tide. Madness Wakes will add The Nightmare Coast dungeon, the first piece of the Nightmare Tide's content, as well as several other changes.
Look forward to Rift's Nightmare Tide expansion later this year, or check out the game right now. It's free-to-play after all, and I know that at I had a ton of fun playing it back when it launched.
