Spry Fox's amazing Road Not Taken has reached the end of its development path. Today the eccentric developer announced that their puzzle game will be releasing on PC and PlayStation 4 starting August 5 in North America, August 6 in Europe. A PS Vita version of the title will follow later this year. Accompanying the announcement is a delightfully bizarre, and oh-so-Spry Fox trailer which channels 90's era Macho Man Randy Savage's Slim Jim commercials.
For those unfamiliar, Road Not Taken is described as a Rogue-like puzzler and takes place on a series of 2D grid levels -- each different than the previous time played. It stars a magical ranger that seems more like a Final Fantasy Black Mage than anything else. Road Not Taken is the story of this ranger's adventure through a forest after a blizzard, solving mysteries and rescuing children, ultimately becoming a story about relationships and "life's surprises".
How Spry Fox's Bizarro Macho Man parody dude Max Awesomepants really captures that spirit and art isn't really clear, but this is Spry Fox we're talking about. I think it's pretty clear that these guys are out to have a lot of fun with the game's they're creating. Or perhaps they figured that the game's somber nature simply didn't fit very well with the requirements of a sizzle trailer. Sizzle. They definitely have that and more now.
Road Not Taken will be available on PlayStation 4 and PC starting August 5 in North America, August 6 in Europe. It looks to be one of those wonderful indie titles that folk will regret missing if they pass it by. In the mean time, we can all gather and remember Macho Man Randy Savage together, holding hands.
PS, Triple Town, Spry Fox's other outstanding puzzle game, is currently on sale as part of Steam's Summer shake-up. Look it up!
