Ubisoft is set to show off the next title in its Assassin’s Creed franchise of games, Assassin’s Creed Unity, at the E3 Conference in LA this week. As part of marketing at the event Ubisoft has erected an impressive sized poster outside the Los Angeles Convention Center. The poster appears to depict not one, but four distinct assassin’ characters. This could signal a move to a more co-op based story mode in a series that has long been focused on single-player campaigns.
The Assassin’s Creed series dates back to 2007. That game and subsequent titles in the series allowed you to take on the role of particular assassin throughout. What it never had, despite some fan desire for it, was cooperative multiplayer. Later games in the series did introduce an online versus multiplayer, but it has yet to be expanded into anything akin to the co-op gameplay that titles such as Borderlands offer.
A move towards multiplayer cooperative gameplay would be a radical one for the series. However, considering its annual release cycle this kind of change could potentially keep the franchise from going stale. The speculation isn’t solely based on the poster itself either. It was rumored around 6 weeks ago that Assassin’s Creed Unity would carry a “four player ‘narrative’ co-op mode”. If true then the advertisement outside the E3 conference center may be the first official indication that Ubisoft plan to unveil the co-op mode at this years’ E3 press conference.
The rumor aside, it’s entirely possible that the poster in fact depicts a number of things, none of which are necessarily related to potential co-op gameplay in the upcoming game. It could signal a move towards a GTA V style of story which would see you take on the roles of multiple main characters throughout. It could also depict one character in various guises or perhaps even just be looking to highlight four important characters. That said, I really do hope we get some co-op in Assassin’s Creed Unity as it could be a really defining moment in a franchise that for me at least has gone that bit stale.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is set to release November 2014 on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. More information is expected to follow during the Ubisoft E3 press conference at 15:00pm (PST) on June 9.
