Mortal Kombat X has been announced. Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm Studios, has held us all in the palm of his hand over the past week. The man is true to his word, however, revealing that Mortal Kombat X is indeed a reality right at the strike of 6:00 AM PDT. A trailer shortly followed, the likes of which should have every Mortal Kombat fan, young or old, happy in the way only a dismembered head fatality could make them. Mortal Kombat X is planned for 2015.
There's nothing much to go on in terms of content, but if the CG trailer is any indication it seems like NetherRealm really wants Mortal Kombat X to be extremely graphically impressive. They want the bone snaps to be crisp, the organ explosions to pop, and the severed heads to have many dangly little bits dripping down. Sporting the latest tech in the Unreal Engine, the sky is the limit with graphics, but we won't really know until the platforms are announced. If NetherRealm goes PC/PS4/XONE only, that's a good sign.
A few other things are worth noting. It appears Mortal Kombat X will take a few pages out of Injustice's book and has edge-of-map- transition animations. Or perhaps it's just general environmental cues. Either way, Sub Zero pulled a branch off a tree, froze it, and then chucked it at Scorpion pretty good. Also of note, Scorpion tore a good chunk of Sub Zero's mask off in the fight, perhaps implying that fighters will show damage as the fights go on in Mortal Kombat X.
I'm probably missing a few more hints, too. Do the fighters have effects on the environments they fight in passively? Ah, time to study this one.
Expect more Mortal Kombat X news in the weeks and months ahead of us. Ed Boon's going to love every second of teasing each roster reveal for Mortal Kombat X. Judging by this proof of concept CG trailer, I think I'll love it too.
Note: Retailers are listing Mortal Kombat X as cross-gen, and considering official posters have already been shipped out for preorders I'd say it's pretty reliable that they'd know the platforms. (Thanks for the heads up, Aussie Legend)
