Sonic needs more friends, everyone, and so Sega shall provide. Today the team introduced the fifth protagonist for the Sonic Boom franchise, Sticks. Sticks is a jungle badger who I guess comes from the uncivilized wilderness. It's hard to tell, because the civilized Sonic and friends don't wear clothes, while uncivilized Sticks has wrapped herself in furs. Anyway, Sticks wields a boomerang and is said to be a tenacious hunter with primal tendencies. Yup!
Hiroyuki Miyazaki, Chief Content Officer for the Sonic Brand at Sega of America, offered the following prepared statement:
"Sticks is a significant addition to the Sonic Boom universe and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. She brings a quirky personality and perspective to the team dynamic, and we look forward to sharing this energetic and funny new character with the world."
For those unfamiliar with the Sonic Boom brand, it's Sega's next big move to bring Sonic back into the world's eye. Well be getting a Nintendo Wii U and 3DS game, as well as a television series and certainly plenty of toys. Starring in the reboot will be Sonic, of course, along with Tails, Amy, a beefed up version of Knuckles and then this new addition Sticks.
It's fun to see the characters and each of their individual strengths, which quite clearly fit into different types of gameplay. Sonic goes fast, Tails can fly, Knuckles is strong, Amy has her gadgets and weapons, while Sticks has a ranged boomerang and wilderness survival skills. It's also nice simply because there will be two ladies on the team. Progress?
Sonic Boom is two different games, one for Wii U developed by Big Red Button and one for 3DS made by Sanzaru Games. Neither has a release date, but I'd expect them this fall since they're meant to be prequels for next year's television show.
