Among League of Legends' list of champions, there are some that quite clearly need visual updates -- like, urgently. Karthus is not necessarily the top champion on that list. He's got his staff, his freaky robes and his skull face and he very much feels comfortable among the crazy visual variance in League. Yet when Riot announced Karthus was next to be updated and showed what they've got in store, no one, and I mean no one, can say Karthus' update isn't something to be excited about.
I'm a huge fan of all of League of Legends' visual updates, except Soraka. Ugh, poor Soraka. Karthus though, is the first champion where I really think Riot 100% recaptured the essence of the original character despite some pretty extreme changes. For instance, the red beam of death that is Karthus' ultimate skill is no longer red. It's smokey and ghoulish, a glowing white if anything. But it works. Oh man, it works so good.
Karthus is now skinny, like an undead skeleton mage should be. He's got legs, so him and Twitch can finally stop attending counseling groups about not having feet anymore. His staff is big and detailed and full of unholy powers, and his skins actually are identifiably unique. The new Karthus is rad. Or terrifying. Whichever Karthus would prefer, because I'm not going to mess with this guy.
It's also funny and worth mentioning, but the visual update gets rid of the skull face for a zombie face, which will get rid of the censorship certain territories have. Yes, some regions don't allow skulls showing on video game characters. Zombie faces, however, are totally cool.
Expect Karthus version 2.0 to hit the League of Legends PBE soon, followed by a full launch over the next few weeks.
