It's here! It's here! The Xbox One's "Games With Gold" program is here! Starting in June Xbox One owners will get to partake in the glorious tradition of receiving games with the monthly premium subscription. Microsoft has two sweet games planned for Xbox One owners in June, implying they'll be using the same format they've been using for Xbox 360 "Games With Gold" up to this point. Speaking of Xbox 360, the "Games With Gold" program will be continuing on that platform too -- and June even has a bonus!
Yes, there will be three games for Xbox 360 owners this June as a part of "Games With Gold" as a result of Microsoft's 1-year celebration of the program. It's a totally awesome bonus too, on top of what could be the best 2-game line-up from the program yet. Pack on the start of the Xbox One program and this is by far Microsoft's best month for the program yet. Though I suppose it shouldn't be surprising, considering June coincides with E3.
- Max: The Curse of Brotherhood
- Halo: Spartan Assault
- Dark Souls
- Charlie Murder
- Bonus: Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
Ahh, that Dark Souls pick-up is so glorious. Add in the Super Street Fighter IV addition on the verge of the launch of the Ultimate Street Fighter IV in August and there's so much value here -- it may be the best month yet of "free" games from these subscription programs. While the Xbox One games may not be huge, they are both great games that fit into Microsoft's pricing scheme. Add in the fact that Microsoft apparently will include two Xbox One games a month versus the PlayStation 4's single game and wow, we've actually got a fight going on.
I've admittedly been rather dismissive of Microsoft's "Games With Gold" program up to this point. Their reliance on an all too apparent price cap for their games (one game $20, one game $15) made their selection crippled, plus the lack of next-gen options was hugely disappointing. June is a new life for the program. Let's see if Microsoft continues the trend in July and on, or if this is just a big marketing push for E3.
Oh! One final note. In addition to free games each month, Microsoft will also be adding monthly Xbox One sales akin to the PlayStation + sales that Sony does. June will kick off the sales with savings on Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse, and a few "surprises." Microsoft's calling this the virtual VIP room for Xbox One Gold subscribers. Hopefully they've got some great ideas in the works. I know my wallet's already crying.
Don't forget to pick up this month's Xbox 360 "Games With Gold" titles Dust: An Elysian Tale (available now) and Saints Row: The Third (available next week).
