It's been a while since we last hear about Insomniac Games' exclusive for the Xbox One, Sunset Overdrive. It has definitely been worth the wait, however, as today's big information overload has done its job. A four minute mix of cinematic insanity and neon-colored gameplay, Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive first look thrills. It's part Jet Set Radio, part Dead Rising, and all of it mixed with LSD. Something's definitely in the soda, I think.
After the mysterious soda OverCharge is launched, everyone starts turning into neon orange colored mutants. That's basically all the premise anyone needs. Then comes the rampant mutant slaughter with weapons made out of the most random junk imaginable. It's like if Dead Rising embraced its absurdity instead of trying to maintain its realism. Players jump and run along walls, slide down rails and I think shoot lightning out of their butts though don't quote me on that.
How all of this ridiculousness comes together in a single game is perhaps the main complaint folk will walk away with after watching this video. Mission structure, story, goals, progression -- just a teaser of sorts would have been appreciated. While the gameplay is certainly intriguing, I think Insomniac's next challenge will be in proving they've created a full game worth experiencing, as opposed to a quirky idea that's definitely worth trying out.
Sunset Overdrive is planned for release exclusively on Xbox One in fall 2014. Expect to hear more information about the game coming out of E3 next month.
