Telltale Games today put out the first, and hopefully promotional only, screenshots for their upcoming Tales from the Borderlands adventure game series. The five screenshots focus mainly on introducing the main characters, showing off some of the basic gameplay, confirming the setting and tone, as well as teasing a few special treats for fans. Unfortunately the screenshots don't come with any new release information, so the series may still be a ways off.
In the shots we get a closer look at Rhys, a scheming Hyperion employee, and Fiona, a clever con-artist in some early interactions on Pandora. Rhys looks like he's got a robotic bodyguard of some sorts, and Fiona looks like she's very talented at getting into trouble (and probably getting out of it too). A few cameo appearances are also shown, the biggest of which is Zer0 the sword wielding third member of Daft Punk. Odds are more of the franchise's playable characters will also join the cast.
My problem with the screenshots is that they all look, well, like story-board screenshots as opposed to actual pictures taken in-game. The biggest indicator is that the backgrounds all of the screesnhots is fuzzy, intentionally ignorable, and completely distinct from the 3D character models layered over top of it. The shadows especially, for Rhys and then for the three-wheeled car, look completely out of place on-screen. It's more likely these are mock-ups rather than actual screenshots and it's confusing as to why they're represented differently.
Due to their clear incompleteness, it's hard not to say these images look disappointing. Certainly, the character models themselves look solid and of course the concept of an adventure game on Pandora is interesting, but eh... I'd rather have waited and seen something less deceiving. Doubtful we'll actually see anything substantial on this for a while yet.
Tales from the Borderlands is an adventure game from Telltale Games being made in partnership with Gearbox. Sequel to Borderlands 2, apparently loot discovered in the adventure game can even be transferred over to "other areas of the franchise". No release information has yet to be announced, but I'd bet we won't see anything until much later this year at best.
