No matter how many times I watch or see any media from Ubisoft's Child of Light, I can't help but smile. Today's launch trailer, celebrating the game's official release, accurately captures that feeling. It starts like a fairy tale being told to a child, and as you slowly fall asleep the tale awakens under closed eyelids as an adventure both beautiful and touching. Care for spoilers, as this trailer and article may discuss portions of the game.
To recap, Child of Light is an RPG with turn-based combat inspired by classic titles like Grandia. Rather than have a top-down view, however, Child of Light is a 2D side-scrolls where the player, as Aurora, flies around the environment solving puzzles and avoiding/searching out enemies to battle. The story and setting are Ubisoft's love letter to fairy tales and the visual style is like a painted storybook come to life.
I simply can't wait to play this game. Even beyond the game itself, I'm hugely supportive of Ubisoft's effort to create this type of small-team game in-house. Yes, Ubisoft broke off a small number of employees from other projects to experiment with this project, a digital release they only charge $15 for.
Child of Light is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U as a $14.99 digital release. Hopefully everyone finds the world of Lemuria and Aurora's adventure as alluring as it's made to appear in each trailer and screenshot. I can't see how it could be anything else but wonderful.
