Disney took the stage today to announce Disney Infinity 2.0, the next evolution of the popular toybox and real-life figure game. It wasn't exactly a big secret, but we can now confirm Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes has been announced. Starting with six new figures, The Avengers' Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow, Disney Infinity's Marvel Super Heroes will be expanding to next-gen consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One, in addition to previously supported platforms.:
The Super Hero theme expands much farther than just the addition of The Avengers figures to Disney Infinity. In addition to the figures, Disney Infinity 2.0 will also feature skill trees for players to customize their characters and from what was shown on the announcement stream, these things are expansive. Also added are structured levels in the toybox, including a tower defense game and a dungeon crawler game. These will be available on their own purchasable discs.
Of course, the figures are important too. In addition to the 6 Avengers out at launch, Disney confirmed at least another 12 Marvel characters in the works. Some of these were teased during the announcement trailer and include: Nick Fury, Loki, MODOK, Spider-Man and then Groot and Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy. Plus, there are over 80 new power discs that will also be available for Disney Infinity 2. Oh, and they also confirmed more characters from Disney's other major franchises also still coming down the pipeline.
Best of all, however, is that Disney confirmed that all figures from the original Disney Infinity will work with the Marvel Super Heroes iteration of the game. But that's not all. All toybox save files will also be backwards compatible, allowing players to bring over their previous creations. And of course the stands will work with the new game as well.
Disney Infinity 2.0 isn't just about adding Marvel characters to the game, however. Expect several improvements across the board as well as certain specific feature additions. Avalanche felt like their toybox was perhaps a bit too complex for children to truly capture their imaginations at times, so expect huge improvements the interface to help with that. Also, there are these little AI builders now in the game that kids can place to create whole worlds as they watch. That's just the start, of course. There's certain to be more for fans to look forward to.
Expect more Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes information, including more super hero announcements, as we get closet to E3 next month. For now, as far as release information goes, we can only confirm that the game will be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, 3DS, iOS and PC systems.
