Sorry that you Europeans get this pile before SMTIV.

The premise is alright, but the gameplay is pretty much a bust. Stick to Etrian Odyssey if you want a real dungeon crawler.

Honestly, it's way better than it sounds. Yeah, the 3DS' demo for it is arguably on par with Bravely Default's North American demo in how impossibly bad it is, but the Vita demo and actual game are far better. There's some clever translations akin to Dragon Quest (that is, puns) and it's genuinely enjoyable. However, my main complaint is how combat thus far is mostly so effortless and simple that you can turn on autobattle and win with minimal to no damage.

Honestly, I have no idea what Atlus was thinking when releasing that 3DS demo. Having no demo is better than having that.

Didn't know there were demo's out. I'll try the Vita one.

Hmm maybe these types of games are hurting the Jrpg genre reputation / sales in the West. =o

I wouldn't entirely say that. When I went to pre-order my copy, a few people asked what it was and what it's like. I'd place my bet more on it raising morbid curiosity and then, if they aren't interested, just shrugging and saying Japan is weird. If they are interested, well, Japan is still weird.

nah, it's hurting in other parts of the world too. companies just don't like to risk localizing games that aren't Pokemon if they don't have a guarantee hit.

If Ar Tonelico (and by extension the utter flood of generic crap over the course of the ps2 life cycle) didn't, nothing will. We're at a point where Hyperdimension Neptunia not only didn't flop, it's on its fourth sequel, and every entry is localized. I don't even think that's a good series but it is a sign that the genre isn't as dead as people may think.

Genre variety and mid tier publication and development actually seems to be picking up again, which is great after seven years of publishers being helmed by homogenization and bean counters making development decisions.

I picked up the demo on Vita and... yeah the battle mechanics are actually really solid, the creepy shit they advertise is downplayed for the most part being not a whole lot different from Persona's Social Links and there's one character who appears to be designed specifically to shame or at least discourage the people who got it for the fanservice.

The guy basically gives you tutorials on the dating sim-lite stuff present in the game, after the second or third one the protagonist responds more or less, "That's all pretty *bleep*in' creepy, dude. I came here to fight monsters."

The plot is pretty basic jrpg stuff, the situation from God Eater mixed with "You are the chosen one" type nonsense but some of the background stuff sounds a lot more interesting and could be incredibly well executed if done right. The fact that the whole monster fighting organization is a co-op of the church and a technologies corporation, how the kids have to use a company store and are basically indentured servitude or conscripts being handwaved by the church as them being "chosen" by the gods. The fact that there's a company store and in-house currency you can only make if you work for the company. They could really go somewhere with that.
