By Blizzard's reckoning, over 2.7 million brave souls worldwide have risen to challenge the Angel of Death in Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. Or at least that's how many copies of the official expansion pack for Diablo III have sold through at both physical and digital retail fronts since it launched for PC and Mac on March 25th.
While impressive, Reaper of Souls' launch week sales remains below the 3.5 million units that Diablo III managed to move within just 24 hours back in 2012, making it the fastest selling PC title at the time. Of course the original title rode on a high of being one of the most anticipated games ever and has gone through some growing pains and soul searching since then, culminating into shuttering of the in-game auction house just ahead of Reaper of Souls' launch for example. With Reaper of Souls, Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime boasted a return to tradition with "the dark gothic setting to the piles and piles of epic loot."
Since its big number celebration day over at Blizzard, the publisher also confirms that Malthael has been thwarted no less than 1.5 million times during launch week. That number is only going to get even higher once the console versions of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls are released later this year.
