Microsoft's new Xbox kingpin Phil Spencer started his new position with a bang this week. Microsoft Game Studios has been caught up in a bit of restructuring just two days after its former Corporate Vice President moved up the ladder to head the entire Xbox division of Microsoft.
Just how many people were laid off is yet to be announced. The news broke over Twitter when technical producer Elbert Perez and artist Patrick Loughman announced their new work status. Loughman's original tweet has since been removed, though he still references being laid off in other messages. Perez's announcement remains as part of a plug for a new Kickstarter project he's working on. Hopefully he can get some of his former coworkers involved.
Even though layoffs and restructuring are never easy topics to discuss, it's not as uncommon in the industry as one would like. Hopefully Microsoft will release a more detailed assessment of the situation soon. Odds are the layoffs are simply part of a transitionary process related to the recent leadership changes.
We here at Neoseeker wish everyone affected by the recent changes at Microsoft Game Studios the best and hope they're all back to work soon.
